Zeit

Zeit (English: Time) is the eighth studio album by German Neue Deutsche Härte band Rammstein, released on 29 April 2022 through Universal Music. Produced by the band with Olsen Involtini, the album was unplanned and recorded as a result of the band's tour being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdowns enforced due to the pandemic spurred the band's creativity, resulting in spontaneous writing and recording sessions. Rammstein recorded the album in late 2020 and early 2021 at La Fabrique Studios in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, where they recorded their previous album. The album's title track was released as the lead single on 10 March 2022. -Wikipedia

This introspective, incendiary, searingly intelligent set of songs finds them as emotionally invested as they’ve ever been.

Zeit is imperfect, but there’s so much to be savoured here, and aspects you won’t get from any other Rammstein album. It puts perspective on the frailty of life and how quickly time zips past us. Is this the last album? I guess we will have to see, but one thing is for sure: “Adieu” certainly implies as much.

  • Louder Sound

Rammstein's new album is equal parts candid and explosive.

  • Wall of Sound

Zeit, is a different beast from the previous self-titled release. It incorporates more electronic elements, and on a whole is less chaotic and diverse. Whilst Rammstein (2019) hit you hard with the first listen, Zeit is more subdued and holds together better. Thematically it deals with similar issues, and has the absurd and the devastating sitting alongside each other, but similar to Liebe ist Für Alle Da, it is an album that gets better with each listen. If this is the end, it’s a great way to bookend an amazing back catalogue.

RAMMSTEIN have forged a storied career of throwing predictability and caution out of the nearest window and Zeit could well be their boldest endeavour yet. This release has everything you could hope for from the legendary outfit as it traverses through the entire emotional spectrum, proving once more exactly why they are one of the most consistently forward thinking bands to ever grace the music industry. It is uncertain how much longer they will continue to grace us with their presence but before we worry about their inevitable cessation, prepare to embrace another masterpiece.

Whatever the case, Zeit shows Rammstein stepping up their game, offering more intelligent food for thought while remaining true to their deep-seated roots. It’s a bold record from a band that has made a stellar career out of being ballsy, a quirky narrative that dares to stop time so that its listeners might parade their sadness and worship female anatomy. In this, the group’s signature sense of humor remains intact as they move into the next phase of their career. What that will be, only these six talented artists know, but for the rest of us, the ride is bound to be just as shocking and titillating as the past 28 years.

From more serious and introspective themes, to songs about plastic surgery and boobs, Rammstein’s eighth studio album never strays too far from their tried and tested formula but is still more than capable of throwing the occasional curve ball. Cohesive, memorable and impressively consistent, Zeit‘s highest points don’t quite reach the almost completely unattainable snowy peaks of Herzeleid, Mutter or Reise Reise, but the quality is constant throughout and this is a mountain of such formidable calibre that many others never even make it to base camp.

‘Zeit’ is further proof of Rammstein’s fierce command of soundscaping and ineffable heaviness. As the soundscapes shift before you, moving from thrilling bursts of drums into ethereally light choir cries, every element further sinks you into the experience. Just as grand as one would expect from the German rockers, ‘Zeit’ is a disorienting, glorious dose of Neue Deutsche Härte. Thick with charisma and a sharp sense of theatricality, this is another certified classic.

About as Rammstein as they can get – unpredictable, eccentric and always brilliant.

Endlessly replayable, tough but not taxing, for all its heft and might there’s a surprising amount of levity and relief to be found.

As a result, we got quite a calm, philosophical album without action style but with bouncy rhythms and hooligan antics. The musicians write songs that reflect their current state and do not hesitate to be brutal. In this way, they continue to please their fans and do it from the heart.

  • Sea of Tranquility

As per usual, Rammstein never fall short of the mark when they develop their own sense of craziness through what they successfully project out from the closed doors of recording room and on Zeit I feel they admiringly achieve what they set out to do with no hint of failure on sight.

Another curveball is reserved for the heavily autotuned singing of Lügen, which still manages to retain its industrial edge. The closing Adieu is classically ambiguous—is it just the close to an album or is it more: a band bowing out on their own terms, in their own time? Swan song or not, this is Rammstein at their most honest and imperious.

This is unmistakably a record from the provocative German band, but it’s also unlike anything we’ve heard from them before.

  • Epitome of Epic

Zeit is a paradigm shift for Rammstein, having the most transformative set of changes they’ve made since 2001’s Mutter. They’ve taken modern, contemporary musical influences and made them their own, without losing their iconic sound. Hopefully this isn’t the end, but the beginning of a bold new era.
