Rolling Stone
Review Year: 1972 Still, Franklin sweeps through this stylistic hodgepodge with more fire and verve than she’s displayed in years. Even if this isn’t her crossover breakthrough, there’s enough vocal brilliance here to stun any listener within range.

Albumism
Review Year: 2017 It captures Franklin in a nakedly introspective and intimate mode, breaking free from the brutal pain of a failed relationship, while experiencing the bliss of a new one.

Soul Tracks
Even on a major album like Young Gifted and Black, Aretha's musicianship is as often overlooked, as her piano style is charismatic.

Super Seventies
Review Year: 1972 The four original compositions, with the exception of "Rock Steady," are much more sedate and wistful than the other songs on the album.
