Critic Reviews
Show All-
Rolling Stone
The boundary-smashing trio’s latest is one of their least aggressive offerings but it’s still admirably disruptive
-
Stereo Gum
Year Of The Snitch is the kind of moment-to-moment record that we’ve come to expect from Death Grips; their wheelhouse is banging out 13 abrasive rock-rap hybrids
-
Highsnobiety
Year of the Snitch, though markedly easier on the ears than their other albums, is a complex, layered listen, aided in no small part by its remarkable commitment to a concept none of us (perhaps not even the band themselves) may ever truly come to grasp
-
Metal Storm
Although they certainly didn't need any further proof of their relevancy, Year Of The Snitch merely reinforces it yet again, and only continues to build upon an already fearsome reputation.
-
The Daily Californian
‘Year of the Snitch’ is existential crisis set to mediocre beats
-
Sputnik Music
a welcome addition to Death Grips’ fairly long discography
-
Arena
"Year of the Snitch" is another excellent album from Death Grips.
-
The 405
Year of the Snitch proves their inimitable sound still has legs, even if listeners will have to work harder than ever to reap the rewards.
-
Weekender
“Year of the Snitch” is not at all an easy record to listen to. It’s confusing, unsettling and often frightening. For those who are willing to plunge into the darkness it offers, though, there are definitely rewards.
-
Pop Matters
the band's most entertaining and fun release yet
-
Inquisitr
Year of the Snitch is an indisputably brilliant record, and it is absolutely Death Grips, through and through, but for the first time ever, a Death Grips album doesn’t just feel like an album.
-
musicOMH
It is an exhilarating release that doesn’t let up, and proves that six years on the group are still a force to be reckoned with.
-
Medium
the end result is unprecedented, unhinged, and boundary-pushing
-
Hyponik
it’s their disposition for cannibalising whole genres and reassembling them as something distinct and uncanny that makes them special. Using that as a metric, Year of the Snitch might just be the most definitively “Death Grips” record they’ve ever released
-
The Young Folks
Year of the Snitch is one of the band’s most catchy albums
-
earbuddy
I think the length is perfect
-
Too Many Blogs
It’s certainly not a bad release per se, they just kind of sound a bit bored.
-
Surreal Resolution
It can be quite confusing in spots and tough to pick up on, but as always, give the album enough listens and its quality shines through, marking this as yet another essential listen in the Death Grips catalog.
-
The Edge
‘Year of the Snitch’ holds water – the pinnacle of the toxic gas cloud of Death Grips’ discography
-
Metal Lifestyle
Each of these tracks pumps with the same energy we’ve come to expect of the Death Grips brand while taking advantage of a different influence.
-
The Student Playlist
With Year Of The Snitch, Death Grips have reclaimed their position as the ringleaders of music’s most repulsive travelling freak show.
-
Dead End Follies
Death Grips have (again) created something new and exciting that eludes definition.
-
Immortal Reviews
It's average as far as a Death Grips album comes, but it certainly succeeds in making you feel something; uncomfortable, that is.
-
GIGsoup
it deserves all the praise in the world
-
Dozens of Donuts
Every ounce of Death Grips' sixth studio LP comes fully-equipped with scintillating talking points. And isn't that exactly what we want from the trio?
-
Hot New Hip Hop
The album features the noisy, industrial, sound design, and confrontational raps found on their previous material.
-
Kill Our Stereo
While Death Grips have changed their sound (again) and toned it down somewhat from the extremity of previous releases, which disappointed me a little personally (‘Bottomless Pit’ is still the shit), they possess the song-writing chops necessary to make said change a graceful one.
-
XFDR Magazine
YEAR OF THE SNITCH, feels like such an apt continuation of the group’s perennial ethos of erraticism handcuffed to reinvention
-
Legends Will Never Die
To be honest, this is one of Death Grips’ best albums.
-
Study Breaks
“Year of the Snitch” is one of the best albums of 2018
-
Mystic Sons
It is still very much Death Grips but with a more self-assured intention. The bold and brash sound they were known for may not be as in-your-face on this album, but it still packs a punch when it needs to and goes a long way in reestablishing their place as one of the most captivating artists on the planet.
-
Nexus Magazine
While it may seem underwhelming or unlistenable at first, give it a chance to sink in and Year of the Snitch is one of the most exciting albums of 2018 so far.
-
Album Analysis
This work was all over the place, yet always found something worth hearing.
-
Christoffer Toresen
Even though the destruction of the production goes a bit too far at times its grit still feels beautiful.
-
4zzzfm
Overall, Year Of The Snitch is a dense concoction of forward thinking musical ideas that doesn’t waste a moment in pushing boundaries at every turn.
-
Melt Reviews
Oh yeah this album is bizarre, and it is glorious.
-
Jacob's Music Hole
“Death Grips’ most volume dynamic album delivers some of the bands’ most inconsistent material to date”
-
The Pop Break
If you’ve been a fan for a while, you have some idea of what to expect. If you’re a newcomer, strap in and blast off. Either way, it’s a wild ride.
-
Let It Happen
Year of the Snitch struck me as the bands most slick, groove based and hip-hop orientated record, the band have by no means played it safe, but have definitely found a niche in being able to warp the classic conventions of urban music.
-
The Line of Best Fit
there’s great work here
-
Tree Fingers
my favourite Death Grips release to date
-
Northern Transmissions
Death Grips open up their sound a lot and let singular hooks drive more than ever
-
Color & Rhyme
Death Grips haven’t lost their touch and will continue to make new sounds and music that, while sounding new, still stay true to their original sounds that made them great in the first place
-
Al Things Loud
despite some clear highlights and enjoyable moments, it’s just another Death Grips album
-
North Tide Press
All in all, Death Grips have provided another stellar addition to their already stellar discography, and there’s very little to fault here.
-
Casey's Album Reviews
Rides shouting vocals that add life and a sinister feeling as well, but for Year of the Snitch they’ve taken some of the intensity out, however songs from year of the snitch still keep the strangeness and the buzzing rhythms that Death Grips fans enjoy.
-
Nice Listen
In the end, the album offers a more varied sound than any of their previous work to make a challenging listen. While not as cryptic or crisp as their previous work, Year Of The Snitch creates challenging songs that are the most manic and extreme the band has ever made.
-
Pitchfork
an M-80 blown up in an empty clearing—explosive, fun as hell, but lacking a clear target to give it meaning
