  • Review Fix

Wildfire is emotionally diverse, with a mix of meaningful and fun tracks. Platten’s years as a struggling artist seem to have paid off, the result being an overall incredible album.

Efficient in conjuring intense emotion, the album has the hallmarks of a temporary success, but Platten’s identity gets lost.

The album may gain a following among music and beat lovers, but not lyric people. Its radio friendly lyrics and sounds will attract the young crowd.

  • Hooks are prevalent, lyrics are naive but touching and the choruses are M/. It's simple music but it's charming as hell.

This said, a good pop song is just that, and Wildfire (Platten’s third studio album; her debut proper, Trust in Me, came out in 2003) is full of them.

Nearly half the album is filled with tracks ready to become radio singles. Wildfire is proof that she’s avoiding the curse of the one-hit wonder pretty well.

It’s a feel-good, pure pop album, and despite lacking originality on many of the songs, it’s syrupy sweet and delivers exactly what a pop album should.

Her tracks exude a strong sense of self and she sounds strongly anchored, even if the production is a tad glossier than before.

Platten's songwriting style can be broken down into two parts: forced rhymes and disconnected imagery; the latter mystically leading people to the belief that Platten is somehow an original and half-decent lyricist.

As a body of work “Wildfire” is a strong mainstream debut for Rachel Platten that has the right amount of honesty and playfulness.

The writing is painfully clumsy and adolescent, the vocals are underwhelming, and the best instrumental ideas are cribbed from different acts and not executed all that well.
