Whole Lotta Red will remind you how catchy, wild, and wacky Playboi Carti’s music is.

The Atlanta rapper’s third record is both wildly innovative and strikingly consistent. It’s hard, melodic, experimental, and unlike anything else happening in mainstream rap.

Whole Lotta Red is a headlong leap into oblivion, into the unknown. Carti changed his swag. Metamorphosis. Metamorphosis. Metamorphosis. Metamorphosis. Metamorphosis. Metamorphosis. Metamorphosis.

Whole Lotta Red is a versatile, experimental, and grand pop statement from a singular artist in full command of his authorship.

While losing some of the pop appeal of his previous work, Whole Lotta Red represents Playboi Carti coming into a new phase of his artistry, however jagged and disorienting the process may be.

When Whole Lotta Red is on, I think of much better albums and tapes put out in the last year by young rappers, like Baby Smoove’s I’m Still Perfect and Quin NFN’s QUINCHO. I think about the attention and discussion lavished on this album while those and countless others wait in the wings to be noticed. Is this what hype in 2020 and beyond is going to amount to? Hey, maybe this album has something to say after all.

Album is a classic if you despise it and it's not as good as you want it to be if you love it. But what do I know? Decide for yourself.

There is probably a good album trying to squeeze itself out of Whole Lotta Red. With some editing to possibly half it's size, some push back from producers and some rethinking this might of worked. As it stands Playboi's new album is a disappointing follow up to Die Lit and certainly not the Christmas present that we expected.

While “Whole Lotta Red” may not be the project it was hyped up to be, it is still an overall solid effort. Despite the roughness around the edges, any time an artist attempts to expand their horizons deserves credit. He may not always stick the landing, but Playboi Carti always manages to keep things fresh and do things his way.

  • Legends Will Never Die

Even though it’s not as fantastic as self-titled or Die Lit, this album was still very much worth the 859 day wait. Some filler cuts are thrown in here & there, but I do appreciate him experimenting a more in comparison to his previous work.

I can’t say I hate this album but I also can’t say it’s an overall improvement from Die Lit. I think Playboi’s debut was a superior album experience because of the overall vibe and entertainment but Whole Lotta Red was a more of an expression of Playboi Carti himself.

Whole Lotta Red will probably be appreciated more for its boldest ideas than its overall execution.

On the most anticipated and ambitious project of his career, the SoundCloud-rap icon channels the cathartic spectacle of metal and hardcore punk.

Despite the wait for Carti’s highly anticipated third album, the wait was undoubtedly worth it as Carti has yet again evolved his unique sound. With the help from a talented set of producers, “Whole Lotta Red” ends this year in music with Carti punching his listeners in the face with his mic unapologetically.

Carti delivered an experimental and ambitious project that may have polarized many at its release, but will surely grow acclaim in time. The album is a slap in the face to anyone who expected Carti to just dump out a stylistic sequel to Die Lit. Whole Lotta Red challenges the listener to experience the outer creative walls of trap music that no mainstream artist has managed to touch. Soon enough, people will realize this is Carti’s most mature and groundbreaking project yet.

With any big release that is this strange and experimental it is ultimately up to time to see if stylistic choices paid off, but given Playboi Carti’s track record of pushing his sound (and rap as a whole) into new and exciting directions, I think time will reward this record.

Whole Lotta Red is undoubtedly Playboi Carti’s most polarising album to date, but fans and sceptics of this new sound alike should expect it to strongly influence the hip hop genre for the foreseeable future.
