As a whole, Who I Am was a remarkable statement from an artist as commercially viable as Jackson was at the time, and still is. While he provided enough tempo and mainstream appeal for an impressive run of radio hits, the bulk of this album is made up of gentle yet decidedly traditional country music that Jackson uses effectively to surround insightful, emotional, and memorable lyrics from himself and the best songwriters in the business, all delivered with his best trademark twang.

This is solid from top to bottom and one of Jackson's strongest outings.

If Who I Am lacks the emotional depth of Jackson’s earlier records, it is also aptly named. Think of it as a portrait of a man taking stock, sorting out who he is and what’s really important to him — and desperately in need of some time to enjoy his success.
