The Rejects make pop songs sound so effortless, and that’s not easy.

They show only a little tendency to grow beyond the limitations of their chosen genre.

Nothing if not a commercial record, and any lack of distinction won't keep these would-be singles from finding a place on digital radio

But this is not an album that you’re going to come back to again and again. It’s tuneful in places, but ultimately pretty vapid.

What it does do is showcase Ritter to be a stronger vocalist than previously thought.

While the record isn't overtly ambitious or deep, it's no dirty little secret that it's slightly deeper and superbly fun.

The band falters when it comes to slowing things down and looking inward, but despite this, When the World Comes Down is a fun, addictive album that will have fans hitting repeat.

This won’t appeal to purists, but judged objectively, there’s definitely something here.

But I also think there’s enough here, even if it’s just the singles, to tempt even the haters to check them out this time round…

Thoughtful arrangements that are bursting with breaks and gimmicks, and the opulent production of Eric Valentine testify to the maturity and, above all, the time invested.

Straightforward pop tunes about heartbreak, heartache, and other cheerless conditions of the cardiac organ.

It might be like listening to music while wrapped in candy floss and drowning in a Wonker-esque lake of chocolate, but in all honesty, death by ear candy isn’t the worst possible way to go, is it?

A sense of maturing here, a willingness to step outside of what works.

Good for them, and for us. More restraint in the production may have yielded an even stronger effort.
