After a global hit as odd as Dance Monkey, Toni Watson had dream conditions to write a debut. Instead, the album is unadventurous and occasionally exhausting.

Welcome to the Madhouse is truly the worst. It’s hard to even make jokes about because it’s so bad that I just want to call my mom and tell her I love her. It’s destroyed the eternal optimist in me. This is everything I hate about music rolled up into one hackneyed, pandering, faux-defiant, poorly produced, gratingly sung, lyrically immature sack of incontrovertible dog shit.

After ‘Dance Monkey’ surpassed the position of the most-streamed song in history, the album has a lot to live up to in not only popularity but also public debate. Even if Tones and I doesn’t hit the spot for you, I think we can all agree that the strides she makes with her music are applaudable, and I think ‘Welcome to the Madhouse’ is worth a listen nonetheless.

Like a funhouse mirror, Tones And I’s debut record twists and warps to reflect the experiences that have shaped her. While she’s already a world-renowned pop powerhouse, ‘Welcome to the Mad House’ further flexes her sincere songwriting, penchant for contagious hooks and unparalleled vocal prowess.

  • The Upcoming

Tones and I’s debut album Welcome to the Madhouse creates a vibe of indie circus. It’s very similar to a crossover of Melanie Martinez and Halsey, with a taste for colour and brightness amidst dark topics, personal demons and struggles. There are sentimental parts such as dealing with loneliness and that feeling of missing someone, alongside toxic realisations and unhealthy coping mechanisms. All of this is wrapped in Sia-like vocals that transform with the transition from one track production to the next.

Tones and I proves she’s no one-hit wonder with debut album.

‘Welcome To The Madhouse’ is an ambitious and bold body of work that looks towards the future and who she wants to be as an artist. This 14 track collection includes the recent bouncy singles ‘Fly Away’, ‘Cloudy Day’ and ‘Won’t Sleep’ but the rest of the record is full of fresh new music that her fans are going to be very excited to soak themselves in. With a range of heartfelt ballads to straight-fire bangers, this is truly an album of experimentation and self exploration.

With her cherubically buoyant voice and outsider attitude, Watson makes infectious Top 40-friendly songs with enough of a personally distinctive point of view that they often feel like she's singing directly to her fans and from her own experience.

It’s to be admired, certainly, but Welcome to the Madhouse was perhaps the opportunity to let her fans inside her world a little more: instead of bringing them into a haunted house of distorted mirrors, a little more realism might have been worthwhile.

Welcome to the Madhouse is an impressive debut foray into the pop landscape for a supremely talented artist, one who will certainly find more success in the United States in the years to come.
