Critic Reviews
Show All-
Pitchfork
Although it’s neither as purposeful nor as prescient as many of his earlier EPs, Sam Beam’s latest release carries far more weight than its self-deprecating title implies.
-
Drowned in Sound
While Iron & Wine may feel a little like an old friend, something to return to after a long dark night of the soul, and while there may not be any surprises here, this is a small record holding some big thoughts - and Beam doesn’t need a big band sound to do them justice.
-
Pop Matters
Sam Beam is still able to express that nostalgic combination of melancholy and hope, even when taking a safe approach to songwriting on Weed Garden.
-
AP News
“Weed Garden” is both a wonderful bonus in relation to “Beast Epic” and an enchanting collection that deserves to be valued for its own plentiful merits.
-
Sound Lab
both a purposeful artistic coda to one of Iron & Wine’s strongest releases in years as well as the best E.P. in their catalog
-
All Music
a nice little diversion, and finds both Beam and the band he oversees at the top of their long-running game
-
Spill Magazine
There is a little less variation on the EP than on the album, but the songs are just as lovely. They have a strong vibe and seems to float freely and willingly from the band.
-
Glide Magazine
Both tracks are exquisite in their effortless sincerity – perhaps two of the best songs Beam has ever written – and true credit to a wonderful songwriter at the top of his game.
-
Dead Press
it lacks any real punch
-
Music Tap
Again, this is an EP, a between-projects affair and, in that respect, it’s an accomplishment and an accomplished recording, managing to transfix, if only for a little bit of a shorter running time.
-
Exclaim!
a quaint coda for those fans wanting a little bit more of Iron & Wine's signature sound
-
National Post
a wonderful bonus in relation to “Beast Epic” and an enchanting collection that deserves to be valued for its own plentiful merits
-
Secret Meeting
let’s just be thankful Sam Beam went back to dig through his unfinished songs, rather than leaving them on the heap
-
Richer Sound
beautifully presented and well-rounded in its content
-
Album of the Year
I love his story telling, his soft guidance through emotion, he's a leader in the genre and in each song. Great quality for how short it is.
-
KRCC 91.5
Blended together, the listener is treated to lush musical gems that are supported equally by orchestral string arrangements and off-kilter, wonky samples and synths.
-
Norman Records
Sam Beam & co return as Iron & Wine to follow up their Grammy-nominated LP released in early 2018, 'Beast Epic'. Weed Garden is a collection of songs to complement the aforementioned record; its writing has been an evolving process the past three years.
-
Bearded Magazine
Weed Garden is the perfect companion to last year’s Beast Epic. Though like pesky weeds, they don't quite belong with Iron & Wine’s renowned foliage - the EP is still a much-needed top-up for fans to tide over until the next epic.
-
Folk Radio
The tones and themes all feel part of the larger narrative that presented itself on Beast Epic bringing this collection of characters full circle.
-
World News Buz
There are loads of references to nature – the ocean, butterflies, serpents, rain, clouds, flowers, winds and waves – but it surely’s all associated to the human expertise and the ultimate three songs maintain the theme.
-
X-press Magazine
In the space of six songs, Sam Beam manages to pack in as much warmth and heart as most can only manage in a full length. Weed Garden is the musical equivalent of going to bed on a cold night, with a honey soaked mug of tea and a cat curled up on your feet.
