Sia migrates from understated R&B to energetic pop with a few refreshing results.

The album’s accessible tunes might not stand up to in-depth analysis, but they stand a good chance of lighting up cheesy club nights everywhere.

On her first album of uptempo numbers, the 34-year-old combines disco funk with the throwback soul of U.K. crooners like Adele.

. . . her latest effort, We Are Born, takes a headlong leap into pop territory—and it suits her well.

Each song on We Are Born is vibrant and playful, colored by zany guitar riffs, celebratory hand claps, and impossibly catchy collection of lyrical hooks.

On her fifth album, Australian headline-grabber Sia (full name Sia Fuller) is grabbing her listeners by their toes and forcing them to dance. Fast.

Ultimately, it’s an album of songs begging to be remixed for a club, which I’m sure will happen and I’m sure lots of people will enjoy.

  • Pop Matters

On Sia's We Are Born, the Australian chanteuse switches gears from her more somber early work and creates an infectiously happy dance-pop album.

With this, her fourth proper album, recorded for yet another new label (pop/hip-hop titan Jive), the Australian singer has made a massive pop leap: a sunshiny, highly caffeinated set of frothy dance tracks and feel-good lite-funk.

There’s a diamond buried in the rough, but We Are Born ain’t it.

On the 14-song set, the singer/songwriter brings her jazz and soul influences while maintaining a steady pop undertone.

Though a far cry from her mid-tempo Muzak of 2008, fifth studio LP We Are Born is as mild-tempered as most ‘90s Top 40 pop, lacking the sexual innuendo and oomph of her label Jive Records’ past luminaries.

Sia makes ridiculously catchy pop with a dance beat that’s so squeaky clean that no funk can grow on it.

‘We Are Born’ is, without a doubt, one of the best albums I’ve heard all year, and it may be too early to say this yet, but it’s inching closer and closer to my top ten of 2010.

Unlike her last disc, 2008’s Some People Have Real Problems, the new album is comprised mostly of upbeat electro-pop tracks.

I knew that she had a soft sound, but I didn't realize she was considered a dance pop singer.

Sia’s voice can wonderfully stand alone. It’s the music backing her that I’m indifferent about.

A departure from her down-tempo work of the past, We Are Born is a bold and energetic pop album, which clearly exhibits her vocal diversity and talent.

Yet We Are Born accentuates Sia’s goofy party-girl side: Produced by Lily Allen’s mate Greg Kurstin (the Bird & the Bee), it’s full of up-tempo electro-pop jams that sound like Amy Winehouse covering Toni Basil’s “Mickey.”
