This really is a painful listen, and for her sake and that of the listener, the saving grace is that it’s only an E.P, as a full-length album would really go some way to damaging her career.

The flagship EP strips away the candy-hued catwalks and fist-pumping anthems that coloured XCX’s last LP, leaving booming beats, chopped-up voices, and a curtain of steam.

  • Cicabe's Ramblings

Lyrically, this is weak, and production-wise, it's cluttered and confused. There's only really one tolerable melody, but even that's squandered.

As a four track EP, there isn’t a dull moment. The production is sharp, her lyricism shines, and the respective styles of SOPHIE and Charli XCX blend seamlessly.

The most exciting thing about Vroom Vroom is that it doesn’t actually feel like a bold new direction foreshadowing a major career left-turn for Charli. It just feels like her having a 12-minute laugh with a similarly brilliant collaborator.

If the EP proves to be a one-off, it will remain a curiosity in Aitchison's discography, one of her many musical explorations. Yet, there's enough that works on Vroom Vroom to hope that it's the beginning of something much bigger. 6/10.
