Rolling Stone
1979 - the material on Van Halen II comes up consistently ruminative and semirollicking, fleshed out as it is by the stilted instrumental blarings of lead guitarist Edward Van Halen, bassist Michael Anthony and drummer Alex Van Halen

Van Halen News Desk
It was pure musical bombast ... It features some of the band's best-loved songs
-
Classic Rock Review
features some of the band’s best individual tracks and may well showcase Van Halen at its cohesive best
-
All Music
it's hard not to marvel at these two frontmen, and hard not to be sucked into the vortex of some of the grandest hard rock ever made
-

Van Halen II is probably less stunning simply because it came second. It’s hard to jump so quickly into a second album and make jaws drop exactly the same way.

Van Halen 2 saw the dutch brothers flag flying high. It could only fly higher in the coming years. Excelsior!

Steady Eddie's magic fingers and Diamond Dave's manic mugging save this from mediocrity - not the weak songwriting.

Mark's Record Reviews
this second record has a terrific flow to it all the way through. Most of the tracks are upbeat rock and roll party songs
-
Robert Christgau
this is heavy metal that's pure, fast, and clean
-
OO Cities
Throw in several very solid album tracks and it all adds up to another extremely entertaining if not quite classic second installment.

2018 - about as close to perfect of a rock and roll album as I’ve ever heard
-
The Ace Black Blog
2011 - It may not represent any sort of serious progression, but when you are busy having endless fun and dominating the world, evolving is low on the priority list.
