Rolling Stone
That deafening roar of yore might have been an artistic dead end, but the current schlock just isn’t any fun—and this band, even at its most obnoxiously excessive, has always been fun.

Metal Storm
In any event, their 1980 album Unmasked seems like a direct pitch at popularity. It's a pop record. Pure pop rock. But this is Metalstorm, right? It sure is - that's why I'm not going to be very kind.

Mike Ladano
Indeed, Unmasked is not without strengths. Ace Frehley contributed another three songs of his own, continuing the growth he demonstrated on his solo album and Dynasty.

All Music
Deciding factors included the band's failure to mount a stateside tour, the fact that the majority of the compositions on Unmasked were easily forgettable, and longtime fans' weariness with Kiss' attempts to branch out into other musical styles.

2016 - Here we are sixteen years later, and I’m still in love with this album as much as I was that day in the fall of 2000.

2010 - Unmasked has remained one of my favorite KISS album these past thirty years. It’s the middle record of a trilogy of albums where KISS experimented before returning to their roots with a vengeance (1982’s “Creatures of the Night). It’s a really good pop record and captured music at a crossroads.

2018 - but for the most part this is among the weakest in the bands large back catalog

In the final telling, the impostors are the unmasked.

2017 - Unmasked is just so easy to listen to. It’s catchy, it’s hooky and poppy.
