    INXS's second studio album has touches of '70s Bowie and is, for the most part, purged of the ska of INXS. On this album, they were learning how to be a melting pot of sounds without any one specifically taking over, and were beginning to learn how to use their sax player to add color without having it be a driving force behind the music.

    . . . this is indeed an album of transition-a band who were lucky enough to document themselves growing into a tight and slightly funky outfit, even though they came from the very white confines of New Wave pop in a location that wasn’t fully discovered.

    Underneath The Colours is easily the best LP to demonstrate the power of spontaneous hooks I've heard so far. Every song on here becomes interesting on second or third listen, and you have no right whatsoever to doubt the compositional talents or the intelligence of the composing team.

    1981’s Underneath the Colours spawned their cover hit of “The Loved One” (by Aussie band The Loved Ones) and suddenly Hutchence found his voice as well as his songwriting style, teaming up with the band’s keyboards wizard and main composer Andrew Farriss who provided the singer with the bullets for his gun.
