The production on Underneath is masterful and captures Code Orange so well in every single aspect of their core sound. The heaviness, the rawness, the crazy tempo changes, the vocals, are all mapped out extremely well.

With jaw unhinged, Code Orange's Underneath, out Friday, devours a body of extreme sounds — sludge, noise, metallic hardcore, doom, grunge, industrial and whatever else it takes to make the mosh pit swarm — to make uncompromisingly chaotic metal.

For their fourth full-length LP, Code Orange yet again confound all expectations to craft a massively-layered, genre-defying experience that is chock full of Hardcore aggression, Industrial atmospheres and textures, and a colossally daring need to experiment within the framework of every single track.

Code Orange might just be the first band to be mainstream metal, hipster metal, and hardcore scene-approved all at once, and that chameleonic ability is no small part of what makes Underneath great.

Underneath is a beast of an album. It’s not afraid to call things out as they are and turn a filthy mirror onto our current society. It does so in a vile and grimy package, and while the sheer harshness of the album may lead some to have headaches, it is a sentiment that should at least be acknowledged by many fans of extreme music.

It is only slightly easier to digest than previous efforts, but the music on this album still aims for the throat and refuses to let go.
