Dropkick Murphys' Turn Up That Dial is good time music for good times to come.

Certainly there are songs that would have benefited from a softer touch, but the band’s motivation isn’t to tickle every one of our varied aural taste buds. It’s simply to get us back on our feet. Turn Up That Dial won’t dethrone 2005’s career-defining The Warrior’s Code, but it’s a welcome hug from a collective who are, as ever, the best of men.

The Dropkick Murphys should be listened to amongst a group of lads and ladies as thick as thieves. It is about the good times of being down on your luck more by choice than by circumstance. Album after album, the Dropkick Murphys tap into the Irish vein coursing across America and a timeless nostalgia for culture across the sea.

The album is a welcome return to form for Dropkick Murphys, who had been at risk of falling into the trap for many long serving bands of releasing albums with a few stand out songs but too much filler.

Turn Up That Dial won’t surprise anyone who knows the Dropkick Murphys. They’ve nailed their Celtic colours to the flagpole many times over and that’s no bad thing. Another great album to add to their catalogue.

From the first notes played on the Boston Celtic punks’ new album, a tone is set. It’s the tone of a band that have rediscovered the spark that first ignited their passion to play music.

The album is 40 minutes of pure Dropkick Murphys. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but it doesn’t need to. Turn Up That Dial feels like a party with old good friends, and it feels so good; you are sad when it ends. With this album, the band managed to bring back feelings that were buried for over a year.

It’s hard to see this being anyone’s favourite album, but as a means of keeping the ball rolling that’s still a whole lot of fun in pretty much every regard, it’s hard to be really disappointed by familiarity. It’s a Dropkick Murphys album, after all – this deep in, you know exactly what you’re in for.
