  • The Parrot

Lil Tjay’s style can be compared to more of an R&B singer rather than a rap/hip hop artist; when listening to him you can be reminded of a younger Chris Brown. He is also well spoken and a lyrical genius who has the ability to make you want to go get what you always wanted and can put chills down your back. Lil Tjay is definitely a future artist that you can be sure will stick around.

  • Hit Up Ange

Not only did songs start to sound the same, but his street tales began to feel forced. I do believe TJay has a bright future, though, he just needs to start tapping into his creative side a little more.

A compelling backstory, a knack for picking catchy (if slightly repetitive) beats, a gift for penning inescapable choruses and hooks, and the self-possessed confidence to put it all together into one, marketable package. As long as he remains true to himself, his originality will eventually become undeniable.

  • The Cornell Daily Sun

Speedy and certain in his destiny, Lil Tjay’s ambition is palpable in his personal history and his music. His adept usage of autotune and mind-blasting instrumental complexity supercharges his already intimidatingly quick delivery and wit. From the struggles of old to the shine of new prospects, Lil Tjay is willing to waste little time in emblazoning his legacy on the face of rap.

  • After Glow

True 2 Myself is a 55-minute album filled with buttery, catchy bops that portray a fresh voice ready for stardom. Many of the tracks had previously been released as a part of Tjay’s F.N EP that dropped in late August, or as singles dating back to 2018. But, as the first full-length project Lil Tjay has released as a part of Columbia Records, the pressure’s on for Tjay to put his best material forward and make a name for himself.

  • Hot New Hiphop

As far as debut albums go, True 2 Myself is by no means a disappointment, but it does serve as a reminder that Tjay still has much growth, and perhaps more apt, potential ahead of him. It’s clear, even at his young age, that he’s got all the tools to make become one of the top rappers, not just limited to NYC, now it's more so a matter of developing that toolkit.

  • Pitch Fork

Lil Tjay wants to grow up, and an album feels like part of that process. True 2 Myself is a playlist of soon-to-be singles grouped under the industry-formality heading of an “album.” Inevitably, one of these brooding piano ballads will catch on, followed by another, and Tjay, just like he did less than two years ago, will go on another run.

  • Consequence of sound

What distinguishes True 2 Myself first and foremost is Tjay’s secondary instinct for melody — this teenage balladeer has made possibly the hookiest rap album of the year. Also, his sense of mise-en-scene is spectacular and transportive.

In the end “inoffensive” is the best word I can attach to Lil Tjay’s music. I don’t find him to be terribly innovative or wholly unique compared to his peers, but I’m not mad at listening to him. If you’re not looking for someone who is profoundly deep or lyrically woke, you could do worse than this.
