| JourneyTRIAL BY FIRE
Trial by Fire is the tenth studio album by American rock band Journey. Released on October 22, 1996, the album marked the reunion of the classic 1980s lineup, which had not recorded together since 1983's Frontiers. Trial by Fire was produced by Kevin Shirley, who continues to produce the band's albums. The first album to feature bassist Ross Valory since Frontiers and the last to feature vocalist Steve Perry and drummer Steve Smith until the latter rejoined Journey in 2015. -Wikipedia

The songwriting, as before, is slightly hit-and-miss, with singles like "When You Love a Woman" and "Message of Love" standing out from the handful of mediocre album tracks. Which means, if you've enjoyed Journey in the past, you're certain to enjoy the best moments of Trial by Fire

AV Club
Journey has made another horrifically bloated, overlong, unpleasant slab of glossy AOR pap
-
Hartford Courant
``Trial by Fire'' is strictly for die-hards only, with its usual love ballads that never really recapture the magic of older tunes

This is among the very best Journey albums. In fact with Steve Perry’s voice showing a little more weathering and character, and the band having a more mature sound, I think it is the best.

Los Angeles Times
the members of America's most soulless band have emerged with an album chock-full of its trademark reverb and wretched singing
-
Entertainment Weekly
Trial by Fire won’t change the mind of anyone who thought Journey a polished but hollow hit machine.
-
People
Journey’s songs sound the same as ever
