  • Wall of Sound

I Prevail have definitely outdone themselves, redefining their sound and ultimately telling the world they will stop at nothing to “rise above it“.

I Prevail has gone through quite a bit in their young lives as a band and they have overcome. They have taken that “rock” genre and elevated it. Keep an eye for these guys, their potential is massive and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for them.

Certainly the theme of mental struggle is driven home throughout, making Trauma a personal album, one that is chock-full of raw confessions. You can’t fault unfiltered honesty.

It’s a very solid personal account of a personal struggle that all listeners can relate to.

Granted, I Prevail may be working in a subgenre that is currently working through its next transitional phase, but by taking time on the composition of the tracks, ‘Trauma’ proves to be worthwhile listen.

  • Exclaim!

I Prevail test the limits of this on Trauma and come out ahead of the pack; it's ambitious for a band not yet out of their 20s.

I Prevail could have done something similar with various traumas for this record, but instead it feels like Trauma is just a title for this record, not an embodiment of its make-up.

  • The Soundboard

Trauma may want to rest behind the notion of personal exploration and catharsis, but that feels surface level at the very most, and is only saved from the cynical nadir of The Amity Affliction by a performance that suggests that this is a band who actually want to sound somewhat convincing.

I may be no expert in the field of modern pop music, but if that isn’t the right combination of emotion, Auto-Tune and cheesiness to capture teenage attention spans then I’ve clearly lost touch with the fellow youth.

Such a great variety of songs and the flow from song to song feels right with the minor exception of the placement of “Goodbye”, but I can’t deduct for that.

It borders on exceptional, but when you take a step back and look at this record as a whole, you soon realize that Trauma doesn’t do enough to justify its length or hype.

Trauma’ is the sound of a band stumbling around trying to find an identity, ending up with a tonne of slick ideas, a handful of choruses and nothing else.

What makes “Trauma” such an interesting album is the way it includes elements from the band’s older work while experimenting with some new and very different influences, and all of that is combined together throughout the record to create a memorable sophomore effort.
