It feels more like designer pets or ostentatious sports cars: just because you can afford it doesn’t automatically imbue it with any real worth.

So if you’re feeling charitable, are a Train fan or just curious about how “Heartbreaker,” ″Whole Lotta Love” or “Ramble On” sound in the hands of the three-time Grammy winners known for “Drops of Jupiter” and “Hey, Soul Sister,” this is for you. And only you.

For Train, it probably was a lot of fun pretending to be one of their favorite bands, but for an audience the results are so close to the original that there's not much reason to listen a second time: the first reveals that Train can pull off this stunt but never gives a reason why, other than "because they can."

Hey, man, I take it all back! This is one fucking heavyweight of the album! OK — I’ll concede that until you’ve listened to the album eight hundred times, as I have, it seems as if it’s just one especially heavy song extended over the space of two whole sides. But, hey! you’ve got to admit that the Zeppelin has their distinctive and enchanting formula down stone-cold, man. Like you get the impression they could do it in their sleep.

Undoubtedly if strummed ukuleles, bizarre nonsensical lyrics and a shameless modern pop sheen had been applied to the project it would have been a train wreck, but at least it would have been an interesting train wreck, something that Does Led Zeppelin II is most certainly not.

Nothing can match the reckless, explosive and powerful energy of the ‘real deal.’ Train do give Zeppelin a run for their money as heard on their renditions of “Heartbreaker,” “Whole Lotta Love,” “The Lemon Song” and “Ramble On.”

If you walked into a bar and the band played Led Zeppelin like Train does, you might do a double take. Pat Monahan, who got his start in a Led Zep cover band, reaches the Robert Plant notes with less grit and depth of emotion, while the rest of the group clearly knows the album intimately.

If there are any mega fans of both Train and Led Zeppelin, it may be interesting to hear how the album turns out for then; the familiarity in style will irk these listeners less and the performance might make sense. For everyone else, however, Does Led Zeppelin II is an overall waste of time.

The overall tonal balance of this reissue is probably as honest a rendering as you’ll hear. It sounds similar to the “plum label” original

Is it as good as Led Zeppelin? No, but who cares…it is still fun hearing Pat do Zep as he does it so well.

Apart from that, it’s not too bad. Train’s heart is in the right place. It feels like a labour of love, a sincere attempt at imitative flattery or misplaced act of devotion, rather than a rip-off.

Train's renditions are proficient if sterile with some especially feeble backing vocals.

Train had to have known that the kind of Gus Van Sant-devotion they were exhibiting on the Zeppelin project could only be viewed as an exercise in complete wankery.
