Time doesn't quite match the heights of Lionel Richie or Can't Slow Down, but it successfully updates his familiar concoction of sweet, seductive ballads and light funk for the late '90s.

2013 - The album certainly has its flaws – some plodding AOR arrangements, and so-so songs – but he hasn't sounded this engaged with his music in a very long time.

2013 - The songwriting is sometimes clunky or kind of silly (see “Sexual Religion”), but there’s a lighthearted warmth on nearly every song.

2013 - The dozen tracks are age-appropriate ruminations on love, sex, growing old and finding peace in the little things.

2013 - As such, Time winds up a bit muddled, swinging from moments of genuine sweetness toward sharp saccharine, but even with all its flaws it's nice to hear Stewart engaged again, both as a writer and a singer.

2013 - It’s going to take a lot more than this decent return to original rock songs—his first such release in over a decade– to erase the saccharine taste Stewart has left in the mouths of 70s fans.

To say it’s Stewart’s best album for more than 30 years may, ultimately, not be saying much, but it’s refreshing to hear him at the helm of a high-quality record, to hear him singing with heartfelt vigour, and – perhaps most importantly – having fun.

Perhaps Stewart will fare better if he continues to write like no one is looking.

2013 - I think Rod Stewarts latest project proves that no matter how long you’re out the game you can still come back swinging.

2013 - The important thing, in the end, is that Stewart sounds like he wants to share some confidences over a drink

The biggest problem with Time is that the majority of its songs sound completely dated-more so than on any of Fleetwood Mac's 70s releases
