Pop Matters
2003 - the loosest and most refreshing record of his career. Freed from playing with a roster of studio musicians, McGraw and the band gave the album the kind of crackling energy that can only be produced by seasoned pros with more than a decade together under their belts.
-
My Kind of Country
2012 - decidedly a mixed bag, with a handful of songs that work well, and a larger number of songs that do not.
-
Country Standard Time
2002 - Indeed, the songs here are so full of Big Thoughts expressed in such leaden terms that the CD could have been a grandiose, overblown disaster. ... In the end, even though it can't carry the weight McGraw wants to give it, the process worked.

All Music
McGraw closes the record with Elton John's and Bernie Taupin's "Tiny Dancer," ... Why would anyone try to recreate a song so close to its original version; simple, because they love it. And McGraw's version is gorgeous, soulful, and deep like the rest of And the Dance Hall Kings.

People
2002 - In the end, though, too much of the album is burdened by a pretentiousness that suggests that McGraw’s head is getting way too big for his cowboy hat.

Best Country Singers
Completely absent are the usual drippy sentiments and good 'ol boy bluster; in their place are thoroughly adult themes and effortlessly soulful vocal performances.
