The motor-mouthed rapper’s latest album reboots him as an heir to the early-’00s pop-punk canon.

Most of all, when it’s all fired off as one thing, it doesn’t crash and burn – it bounces off the walls like a rubber ball fired from a cannon. And it feels great when you get hit by it.

  • The Soundboard

If this didn’t have his name attached, it would go nowhere, such is the deep lack of character, profiency or even charm on display here. In other words, it’s a Machine Gun Kelly album, only this time trying to use its new hat as a distraction.

I can honestly say that MGK sounds like he’s in his element on Tickets To My Downfall. I feel like he approaches every single song on the album like a fearless rockstar that doesn’t understand what boundaries are.

Overall, it’s a fully enjoyable pop record for lazy pool days and casual beach drives that serves as a subtle reminder for what radio friendly pop music sounded like when we were growing up.

If you're interested in hearing a mainstream rapper try something different or if you're a hardcore pop punk fan, then you might find something to enjoy on Tickets To My Downfall, but if you aren't already sold on MGK this will likely do nothing but make your opinion of him worse.

Though TTMD is a change of pace from MGK’s typical style, it does not fully abandon his roots, highlighting a multitude of hip-hop guests and beats, party songs, and pop anthems. In fact, he has consistently cited various rock acts as influences, so it was only a matter of time until he fully submerged himself in the genre.

Tickets To My Downfall captures that raw energy and spirit from the whole early 2000s pop punk scene – the studded belts, the spiked hair, the guyliner… If you were into music from that time, and even if you are into the alt rock music of today, you will find at least one track on the album that speaks to you.

It’s genuinely one of the great songs of the year, but it’s also an important reminder to us all that we should be grateful for Downfall.

This is not a fun record, and in this commercially-focused mode pop-punk is as throwaway, and nominally fun, as it gets. If only Kelly could borrow a little enthusiasm from Halsey, whose guest spot on the brutally over-the-top Forget Me Too is a blast.

Despite going for a style that many thought wouldn’t find its footing again in the industry, Kelly and Barker construct a design that a lot fans my age would probably enjoy considering the era it’s borne from. The former rapper turned literal rockstar is finally making the music that he wants to make.

Who knew that the best pop-punk album of the year would come from a rapper? Maxwell Jeffries takes a probe to the latest album from motor-mouthed rapper Machine Gun Kelly, which reboots him as an heir to the early 2000's pop-punk throne.

It is evident that Tickets To My Downfall is a cry for help from Machine Gun Kelly. MGK’s raw talent has always been so present and his energy within his songs are flawless. Although this album is one of his best to date, it is sad to listen to it and think that although it may make us happy, it probably almost killed him making it.

Tickets To My Downfall delivers on Machine Gun Kelly’s pop-punk hopes and dreams, deeply rooted from the early days of covering Blink songs on stage some nine years ago. Since then, the hip-hop rap star has blossomed into a genre defying alternative artist, hellbent on harnessing honest lyrics derived from years of disguised agony, and a soundscape that has naturally progressed into the pop-punk scene, with a collection of confessional tracks that has taken the form of the four-star worthy, fifth full-length Tickets To My Downfall.

It’s the fact that MGK was able to confidently put out an album that proudly showcases his musical influences over the years. The whole album feels like it can be the soundtrack to a coming of age movie. If there was a way for Machine Gun Kelly to put out his thoughts and feelings, Tickets To My Downfall was the best way to do just that.

Kelly has created one of the best recent pop-punk albums in recent years. It’s unfortunate the album has arrived in a time where live music is delayed for the foreseeable future, because every song should be played in an arena. You’ll want to dig out your old Warped Tour t-shirts and apply your black eyeliner, preparing to scream-sing your way through every track.
