While These Things Happen Too delivers plenty of songs that perpetuate the “player” criticisms lobbed at G-Eazy (like “Origami,” “Solar Eclipse” and “Bad Bad News!”) there’s plenty of substance to be found as well. The deeper self-examination and honesty of tracks like “Time,” “Gerald” and “Breakdown” highlight the rapper’s artistic strengths.

When an artist makes a serious attempt to tell the world who they are, they’re at their most vulnerable, and it’s evident in G-Eazy’s lyrics, the switch of flows, beats, and overall storytelling prowess. There’s something everyone can connect to in what might go down as one of the most creative albums of the year.

G-Eazy is making his name known in the music industry. He is determined, he’s prepared, and he has the talent to take his music to whatever new heights he can see. When it comes to becoming a legendary white rapper in the hip-hop arena, we can easily say: “these things happen too.”

Kudos must also go to everything other than G-Eazy on this album. The beats on this album are outstanding, while I thought that the guest features either added a splash of trillness or well-needed soulfulness to the songs that they were featured on. G-Eazy really showed an uncanny ability to put together complete records with this album.

The songs are quite slow as well with no real change in energy throughout the album. Artist like Macklemore and Drake who have influenced G-Eazy have more variety musically on there albums with uptempo and slow songs, whereas the production for this album in general is very airy and colorless.

Dopey, but apparently genuine, it’s the one moment on These Things Happen Too where G-Eazy maybe, actually opens up on an album full of otherwise performative soul-bearing. Still, it’s hard to say whether or not there’s any side of this artist that could really fuel an album’s worth of material.

Throughout These Things Happen Too, G-Eazy balances intensity and fun. For every song about doomed relationships, emotional exhaustion, or loss of identity, G-Eazy offers up moments of triumph and bravado, joined by top-shelf guests like Lil Wayne, Ty Dolla $ign, YG, and many others.

It's neither my fault or G-Eazy's fault, really, that I don't dig this album more. There is no "fault." Sometimes, if we're really being honest, these things just happen.
