While one does get the feeling that there’s a better album somewhere inside of him, his new These Things Happen shows promise.

It's neither my fault or G-Eazy's fault, really, that I don't dig this album more. There is no "fault." Sometimes, if we're really being honest, these things just happen.

The contradictions continue on "These Things Happen." Hotly tipped for the big time forever, he sounds deeply dubious of success on fascinatingly intensive, intricately produced songs such as "Opportunity Costs" and "Almost Famous."

As far as rap is concerned, G-Eazy has delivered a masterpiece for this era—naturally.

This album is weird for me. I like some of the topics and then some of them are just like ummm ok. I like that he talks about his come up and feeling bad because he’s missing important family events due to being on tour. I don’t like how he talks about girls in one song and then the next about how he misses this one girl. Homie needs to decide between having multiple girls for a night or being together with that one, but that’s none of my business.

These Things Happen is a strong, enjoyable LP that will definitely move the 25-year-old closer to wherever it is he wants to go.

G-Eazy has managed to storm to the top of the US charts with his third album, a confection of Drake-lite patter about attractive women succumbing to his charms set to moody mid-tempo beats: plausible enough in short doses, but a monotonous grind over the long run.

  • The Musical Hype

While These Things Happen is filled with analyzable lyrics, the album itself is also easily summarized. Generally, it encompasses money, fame, and hooking up.

This record almost seems to relish in the backlash from forward-thinking millennials. The rapper channels that into some of the most enjoyable hip-hop tracks of the past few years.

Another of the album’s highpoints is the production and its noteworthy variety, which is owed to the fact that the album targets more than just hip-hop fans and therefore features sounds those on a strict rap diet might not be used to hearing. Much of the production lies somewhere between futuristic sounding synth-hop and borderline electronic pop music, reminiscent of an artist like Ryan Hemsworth.

He shows his talent for a good beat and consistently well-suited flows across his verses over the album. Most importantly; he makes you want to hear more…which is essentially the main goal of a debut album.
