THE WORKS
| QueenTHE WORKS
The Works is the eleventh studio album by the British rock band Queen, released on 27 February 1984 by EMI Records in the United Kingdom and it is the band's first studio album to be released by Capitol Records in the United States. After the synth-heavy Hot Space (1982), the album saw the re-emergence of Brian May and Roger Taylor's rock sound, while still incorporating the early 80s retro futuristic electronic music (Freddie Mercury) and New York funk scenes (John Deacon). Recorded at the Record PlantStudios in Los Angeles, California and Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany from August 1983 to January 1984, the album's title comes from a comment Taylor made as recording began "Let's give them the works!" -Wikipedia

Classic Rock Review
hile there are some major weak points in the mix, these are superseded by the brilliant high points as well as the fact that this album turned out to be an important pivot point for Queen in the 1980s

Louder Sound
A satisfying album that worked the band’s hard rock roots back into the equation without sacrificing the electropop and funk strata they’d been embracing over the previous few years.

However, it has enough entertaining moments that it duly earns its place among Queen's finer albums. At the very least, it shows Queen were getting back on the right track after that dismal mistake Hot Space.

Eagle and Child
it’s certainly a good album and deserves a listen

This is not a very interesting album, but it’s a pretty enjoyable one.

Aphoristic Reviews
While The Works might be short of the inspiration of Queen’s best albums, it’s solidly crafted product nonetheless.

Adrian's Album Reviews
The entire album is pretty solid, although a song here and there doesn't work.

Well, after Hot Space, they needed to redeem themselves considerably, and that's what they have done here! The only problem is that there aren't enough songs on the album!

“Radio Gaga,” the single that opens up the new Queen album, is another instant jewel in Queen’s Top Forty crown. ... the rest of The Works — surprise, surprise — ain’t half bad.

All Music
While the songwriting had definitely improved on the resulting The Works in 1984, the album sonically lacked the punch of such earlier releases as News of the World and The Game

Queen’s eleventh studio album, The Works, was a return to fundamentals – it was a rock album, although they didn’t entirely discard the grooves that had graced both The Game and Hot Space.
