The Woman I Am is a record that's a bit bright and sweeter than its predecessor. At times, the record's indie roots are fairly apparent -- the songs are modest, the production crisp but just short of gleaming -- and the slight shift from neo-traditional to chipper country-pop suggests a tonal change that would perhaps have been called label-driven if a label had been involved. The sound might be happily commercial, but the songs are too subtle to be considered pandering, which means The Woman I Am is that rare record that manages to feel like a bid for mainstream success coming straight from the independent sector. It might lack a big strong hook -- there is no song to pull in a skeptic -- but the album has a nice, gentle sway and Pickler has expertly modulated her diva moves so she's now a skillful country singer. It's not an album that makes a career, but rather one that helps a career be built.

It's quite good from a technical construction and it has a lot of texture and feeling to it that calls back to old school traditionalist country music.

After two albums that were as bland as Simon Cowell's wardrobe, Kellie Pickler turned around her career by following the bad-girl path of fellow reality-show alumna Miranda Lambert, which continues on The Woman I Am.

  • She Knows

Her album entitled The Woman I Am features a similarly-titled track and it will have you commending the woman she’s become. The song starts with a country charm and the painful pangs of a classic guitar, but that couldn’t be why I fell in love from the first few seconds. It had to be because this track has that ever-desirable “it” factor.

Kellie Pickler got in touch with her feminine side for her new album, ‘The Woman I Am.’ It was released on Nov. 11, and is full of 12 completely beautiful songs, some that were co-written by her husband, Kyle Jacobs. You can feel their love through both the music and the lyrics.

"The Woman I Am," which she co-wrote with her husband, Kyle Jacobs, is an autobiographical and intimate ballad about Pickler, which she sings beautifully.

Kellie Pickler has quietly become one of the most played female artists on country radio, the unthinking man’s alternative to fellow top twenty regular Miranda Lambert. She’s done it largely with fluff, but there’s no real shame in that.

Kellie Pickler gets personal on her new album, "The Woman I Am," out Nov. 11. If you need proof of this, take one listen to "Selma Drye," a song about a person that Pickler knew very well -- her great grandmother. The singer wrote the song with Billy Montana and Phillip Lammonds, and she tells Billboard that she feels she captured the essence of who she was.

Pickler hasn’t released an album since 2013’s The Woman I Am, which received tepid response despite critical acclaim. The album’s three singles, “Someone Somewhere Tonight,” “Little Bit Gypsy” and “Closer to Nowhere” barely cracked the Top 60 on the Billboard Country Airplay charts.

The music here is good enough for, if not better than, most of what radio is playing so lets hope they will finally take her seriously as an artist and give her a string of successful hits. Kellie, The Woman I Am and her label Black River Entertainment deserve as much. One of 2013’s best.

  • Saving Country Music

The Woman I Am at times speaks very deeply from Pickler’s personal narrative. The opening track “A Little Bit Gypsy” starts the album out very strong. The Woman I Am just seems safe, like in the predictability of the songs “Closer To Nowhere” and “Bonnie and Clyde,” and though this may translate into commercial acceptance, it leaves the distinguished country music listener a little wanting.

  • Taste Of Country

Kellie Pickler's upcoming 'The Woman I Am' album has hit the nail on the head with helping the singer find her groove. It's Pickler at her best -- and that is a good place to be. Much like that moment in time inspired 'Woman,' the album is 12 new songs that show how much the singer has branched out from her first two records. Whether it's her hit 'Someone Somewhere Tonight' or current single 'Little Bit Gypsy,' each song shows a deep, true and honest part of Pickler -- and this album is more 'her' than ever before.

  • My Kind Of Country

The Woman I Am isn’t an outstanding album, but it is a very good one that proves that 100 Proof wasn’t just a fluke and that there is more substance to Kellie Pickler than one might have guessed based upon her first two albums and the dumb blonde shtick she engaged in at the time. The Woman I Am deserves a listen, even if like me, you weren’t a huge fan of Kellie’s early efforts.

  • The Boot

'The Woman I Am' is a pivotal album for Pickler. She departed Sony last year after battling with the label over her third album, the critically acclaimed '100 Proof,' which was a return to her traditional country roots after two albums of slicker material. Sony didn't even release a single, but Pickler was vindicated when critics everywhere hailed the album as the best work of her career.

  • Country Music Matters

Kellie Pickler is releasing her much anticipated 4th studio album, “The Woman I am” TODAY, November 11th. The former “American Idol” contestant and former “Dancing With the Stars” winner has been busy putting together an album that is easily one of the best of 2013. Produced by Luke Wooten and Frank Liddell, Kellie’s traditional leaning sound, fun loving sass and ability to convey emotions are all showcased on this latest project. Kellie’s last album, “100 Hundred Proof,” was country to the core, which seems to fit the North Carolina native to a tee. Kellie continued to stay true to herself on “The Woman I Am” and hopefully it will garner the attention it deserves by finding its way into the hearts of fans that love good solid country music.

High quality music found on Kellie Pickler's "The Woman I Am" evidences how the country singer's last album, "100 Proof," was no fluke. The title track, which Pickler co-wrote with husband Kyle Jacobs, explains how this woman will always have a whole lot of traditional country in her blood. "Sometimes I cry at night/Fall to pieces with Patsy Cline."
