October 18, 2019. Not having to rely so much on the sometimes constricting nature of earnest songwriting allows an elevated emphasis on music and melody on The Wanting. Cody’s able to explore a greater range with his vocals, and the players can stretch their legs a bit without running the risk of interrupting important moments.

October 18, 2019. The album is filled with moments where he looks deep inside his soul, concluding that "There's a black and a white wolf in me," on "Which One I Feed." This image provides the inspiration for the cover art, . . . and that's not too far off from how The Wanting sounds and feels: perhaps Jinks has his tongue somewhat in cheek, but all the old outlaw signifiers are presented as sincere. That slight hint of self-awareness helps give The Wanting a lightness during its songs of alcoholism, loneliness, and lost love, a lightness that helps make the record a balm during tough times.

October 10, 2019. I feel like these two albums stand out on their own. Each record has its own loose lyrical theme . . . The Wanting focusing on opposites like light vs dark and good vs evil. Jinks worked with some of his common co-writers on these albums. There really isn’t a bad track on either of these albums, but here are a few of my favorites. These two albums include some of Cody Jink’s best work. There isn’t a bad track in the bunch and there are some that many fans will call their new favorites.

October 18, 2019. Cody Jinks released a new album called The Wanting on Oct. 18, just one week after the release of his After The Fire album. There are a three songs on this album which were written by Jinks and Tennessee Jet. . . . One of those songs is the title track, which is also the album’s first track. In addition to being a great song, it does a good job at setting the tone for the album.

October 24, 2019. The Wanting is a completely different album that meets at the crossroads of country and classic rock. After the Fire and The Wanting are two very different albums, but both of them are incredibly well done. Both showcase Jinks’s abilities as a compelling songwriter. Whether it’s his sharp lyrics . . . or his melodies that inspire dancing, it’s hard not to admire the songs he produces.

October 21, 2019. The Wanting does carry that added bit of variety to the arrangements and production After The Fire doesn’t, with the focus feeling darker, sharper and a sign of a renewed Jinks ready to move on with a clear mind. . . . The Wanting carries even better tracks than After The Fire; the problem, however, is that The Wanting is a much more inconsistent album, overall.

October 21, 2019. . . . at the end of the day, these are the sorts of projects I feel could have been trimmed to the very best at eight to twelve tracks and Cody Jinks would have had a great one on his hands, instead of two that are good but not great. . . . The Wanting in particular feels like its crying out for a more expansive or heavy mix or for Jinks to sing with more gusto, or even just for the production to better highlight what we do have.

It's challenging coming up with enough superlatives to describe Cody Jinks' "The Wanting." Yes, it surpasses the traditional country sonic test. . . . with so much stiff competition, Jinks is still right there at the top. Years from now, this album will also sound fantastic. It truly has a timeless quality.
