The Wake as a whole, it’s the sound of a veteran band indulging its most bizarre instincts and in the process reconnecting with everything that originally earned them such a loyal and obsessive fan base.

Voivod moves on from punctuated equilibrium to the Quantum evolution the band was known for, and in doing so created one of the best albums of a long career.

While The Wake may lack a standout track such as “We Are Connected” (the very best song of the Mongrain era thus far, for my money), it’s also more cohesive and consistently engaging as a whole than Target Earth was.

if you think the old-timers have had it enough and you have given up hope on the stars of the past, you sure have missed this high-ranker of 2018. The best person to have described this offering might be the drummer, Michel “Away” Langevin, who said the music of this album to be “a futuristic prog thrash metal trek”. Bullseye!

Yet, despite The Wake being no less than elite among them, you aren’t likely to hear anything like that from the members of Voivod, because there really is no need to project a glossy image of yourself walking on the moon when you’ve actually been there.
