THE VELVET UNDERGROUND
| The Velvet UndergroundTHE VELVET UNDERGROUND
The Velvet Underground is the self-titled third studio album by American rock band the Velvet Underground. Released in March 1969, it was their first record with Doug Yule, who was a replacement for John Cale. Recorded in 1968 at TTG Studios in Hollywood, California, the album's sound consisting largely of ballads and straightforward rock songs marked a notable shift in style from the band's previous recordings. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album number 314 in their list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". -Wikipedia

Pitchfork
2014 - The Velvet Underground’s six-disc deluxe edition, including long-sought-after live material from 1969, offers a complete portrait of a period when the Velvets’ populist ambitions were being matched by their exceedingly prolific output.

Contains another bummer experiment, some stereo mystery, but otherwise their best--melodic, literate, compellingly sung; Paul Williams loves it.

Wilson & Alroy's Record Reviews
They ended up with good performances of what must be Reed's best batch of songs ever

Mark's Record Reviews
This album's actually pretty normal! It's still awfully mellow when it wants to be but, unlike the dreary debut, this stuff's kind of charmingly pretty!

Adrian's Album Reviews
As for the album as a whole, I merely like this. It's a little inconsistent in song-writing, rather strange considering the departure of Mr Cale didn't affect that, as Lou wrote pretty much all of the songs, anyway.

Nonetheless, any good rock album collection ought to have this gem in it nonetheless. Both because this is the place where Lou Reed started to blossom as a lyricist, and these melodies are mostly great.

Rolling Stone
1969 - will still go a long way toward convincing the unbelievers that the Velvet Underground can write and play any kind of music they want to with equal brilliance
-
All Music
This album sounds less like the Velvet Underground than any of their studio albums, but it's as personal, honest, and moving as anything Lou Reed ever committed to tape.

2009 - the original art-rock record

Mojo
2014 - Raw, intimate and with moments of epiphany every bit as powerful as a Cale-injected Sister Ray, it brings us as close to Lou Reed as we’d ever get during his five decade career.
-
No Depression
2014 - less of a move into new territory than a return to the side of Reed that had earlier produced songs like “Femme Fatale,” “All Tomorrow’s Parties,” “I’ll Be Your Mirror” and “There She Goes Again.”
