Stereogum
It's on this album that the tension between early INXS and what the band would become is most evident. The authoritative title track is followed by the more sedate "Johnson's Aeroplane" and "Love Is (What I Say)" -- both quite polished but still more in line with their earlier albums. But despite this tension, it is some of their best work.

Consolidating the strengths of Shabooh Shoobah, The Swing is the first consistently impressive INXS album.

A HUGE leap — The Swing sounds like a band ready to take over the world.

Digital Journal
Fourth studio album, The Swing, showcased more of a dance/funk/pop influence that would remain an integral ingredient of INXS's sound from that point on.

Sound Distractions
If ever you needed a reminder of just how good INXS were, one listen to The Swing is all you need. It may not have had as big an impact overseas as its successors Listen Like Thieves or the multi-million selling Kick, but The Swing was the pivotal album where INXS truly defined their sound.

Rolling Stone
Most of The Swing features fairly exciting if bloodless tunes similar to "The One Thing," though some funky dub vibes creep into "Dancing on the Jetty" and "Melting in the Sun." INXS is a talented, intelligent band, but "Original Sin" clearly shows that a healthy dose of soul can turn their earnestness into incandescence.

George Starostin's Reviews
I guess The Swing, true to its name, leans a little bit more towards the dance-pop side than usual, but apart from that, there's really no generalizations to be made. Even the lyrics can't be defined in one swipe... they can't be defined at all.

. . . The Swing presented another nattily-attired set of songs, with the celebratory ‘Burn For You’, glossy ‘Dancing On The Jetty’ and sleek, proto-Kick funk of the Nile Rodgers-produced ‘Original Sin’ among its many state-of-the-art highlights.
