Whether this is the culmination of a short-lived reunion or the beginning of a new run for the band remains to be seen, but one thing is definitely clear – regardless of how their musical endeavours have turned out since, they were producing quality material right from the start.

Like everything Mr. Bungle have done, this return to first principles regularly slamdances over the line between stupidity and genius. The timeless appeal of crossover thrash is absolutely nailed, but you’re never far from an entertaining blast of utter foolishness, best captured when Hypocrites interpolates both traditional Spanish standard La Cucuracha and S.O.D’s Speak English Or Die.

Despite dispensing with the experimental quirks that has defined their career, Raging Wrath is far from your typical thrash album, ramming plenty of musical anarchy up arses throughout a wildly entertaining thrash extravaganza.

  • Smells Like Infinite Sadness

Mr. Bungle were too wonderfully weird to go down such purist path of course, but The Raging Wrath Of The Easter Bunny is an unrelenting beast, a musical metal exorcism of youthful exuberance that ensures them metal cred for life. And hopefully, paves the way for a future album as well.

Mr. Bungle’s The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo, may not fit your mold of what you have grown to know and love of the Bungle, but if you are able to separate it and appreciate it for what it was and now is again, you will really enjoy this album. So much virtuosity and talent packed in one band, one album. The addition of Ian and Lombardo is genius. Patton, Dunn, and Spruance are as clever, enigmatic, and brilliant as they were when they kicked this off 35 years ago.

Think of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy. Each film essentially a new and improved remake of itself. So if the original demo is the first tiny budget Evil Dead, consider this the Army of Darkness version.

There’s a lot to love on The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny. If you’re a metal head who never got into Mr. Bungle, this album will push all your head banging buttons. On the other hand, if you’re a dyed-in-the-wool Bungle fan, this one may initially strike you as a departure. But, you don’t need to have owned a copy of Kill ‘Em All on cassette to appreciate what the band achieves on this release.

I was excited to see another Patton project get the green light, but I wasn’t expecting this total shot of adrenaline.

Overall, the musicianship of each member is undeniable and they bring their talent to deliver thrash metal at its core in The Raging Wrath of The Easter Bunny Demo. Ian’s and Lombardo’s presence shines through and they help Mr. Bungle deliver thrash at its finest. In the end, the only drawback of these thrash renditions is that the sound blends the further one gets into the album. There isn’t any experimentation, as they live and breathe in straight thrash, but fans of thrash won’t find any issues there.

The album’s over-the-top nature isn’t about to usurp the iconic classics of the Big Four, but it’s certainly worthy of personal from that legendary circle.

Having enjoyed the original demo for years, I’d always lusted after a version that could do those songs justice and hey presto, here we are! The album is a whole heap of fun and a welcome return for one of rock’s most innovative bands.
