With wildly catchy guitar riffs, powerful vocals and a spirit of optimism pitted against darker themes – this record offers a unique, moving experience that feels genuine to the band’s roots. Overall, The Phantom Tomorrow feels like a triumph for the rockers and we’re excited to see what comes next for them.

It’s another deceptively thoughtful piece of fantasy bluster from a band who have become increasingly accomplished in their world building. It isn’t the most immediate or viscerally exciting album Black Veil Brides have yet made, but it is a grower that imbues its at times understated grooves with their own rich veins of subtleties.

Suffice it to say, the wait will prove well worth it for existing fans of the band, which has always been an area where Black Veil Brides has excelled in spite of their frequent shifts in both sonic and visual aesthetics. Contrary to what some naysayers in the critical field have thrown this band’s way, there is a level of appeal beyond the mainstream rock and fickle pop world to this band, and this particular album may prove highly attractive to more rock-ribbed metalcore and melodic groove metal fans who prefer their infectious tunes to pack a harder punch. The songs may be short and the cliché hooks plentiful, but there is absolutely a credibility to this that transcends the flashy stage getup.

Overall, this album screams Black Veil Brides. It’s no reinvention of the wheel, but sometimes that’s not what’s needed. Through time, they have polished and refined their sound, and it definitely shows. If they continue to improve like this, I am here for it.

  • Cryptic Rock

Although there is nothing preternatural about the core of this album and mostly consists of some boilerplate chord composition, there is something to be said about the thought they put into the arrangement and composition of each song. The Phantom Tomorrow gets points for conception and narrative storytelling, because it takes a certain amount of nerve to endeavor to create not only your own world but your own Rock Opera.

For a band whose early days was marked by bombastic larger-than-life emo-meets-metal, L.A. rockers Black Veil Brides have matured and focused their sound, leading to some of their best work in 15 years on The Phantom Tomorrow.

While this was not my first time hearing Black Veil Brides, it was my first time listening to an entire album. I usually just hear a track or two while streaming. I was surprised on how listenable the whole album was start to finish and I will be putting in my record collection. Now, I just need to catch them live the next time through.

Frontman Andy Biersack shows more range than ever, there is no way around it, his voice on this record is downright POWERFUL, always present, and simply ear candy if you are open to rock voices of the baritone persuasion. The songwriting seems sharper than ever, and I always mention this because at their heart of hearts, maybe even more than being a rock band, BVB are song-writers. The Main focus of their music is to be palatable, enjoyed and immersive to rock fans and even those outside of rock’s rugged realms, TPT accomplishes this with ease, without ever betraying the bands core sound and fanbase.

More in line with the band’s self-titled effort and ‘Set The World On Fire’ than previous conceptual offerings, the album’s overarching message of self-empowerment does add gallons of spirit and passion to songs that more than stand on their own two feet as grandiose anthems with gripping contemporary resonance. Black Veil Brides come so close to nailing this.

‘The Phantom Tomorrow’ is an album that is dressed for success and hereby will continue the remarkable achievement of the L.A.-based powerhouse. This album will not be a game-changer. Fans will love what they get offered and if you belong to the group of people that wasn’t interested in the sound of the quintet, also this album will not help to change your mind. Solid, in all meanings of the word.

Black Veil Brides have laid forth another masterful concept record to accompany their already impressive resume. Though I would have liked to see the band expand on their tonal pallet giving listeners a little more variety it’s that element of familiarity which keeps me coming back time and time again. Black Veil Brides “The Phantom Tomorrow” is a continuation of albums which play to the bands strong suit, a suit which continually keeps them at the fore front of modern rock.
