I’m sure plenty of people will miss the point of this record. Those who can’t cope with seeing men wear make-up, or talking about their feelings are unlikely to benefit from this release.

  • DISTORTED SOUND

this is still very much an album that leans towards the poppier side of alternative music but it feels more serious than anything AS IT IS have done before.

I have to give the band props for trying to create a concept album promoting mental health. It’s a serious issue, and the more we talk about it the more good can be done.

On The Great Depression, there are standouts and some small flakes of filler, but by and large, As It Is prove that they are a viable, enjoyable commodity on the 2018 scene.

Catchy, heavy - but not too heavy - and a dash of screaming... overall, good tunes.

There’s more growth to be done, that goes without saying, but there’s been enough faith and good will accrued to believe that As It Is are only going to carry on getting better.

The Great Depression is notable primarily as an important contribution to an ongoing conversation, and a valuable step up for a Marmite band – not a masterpiece in itself.

I feel very satisfied by what As It Is have created with the album. It feels like an evolution and a honing of their creativity into something that’s very real and emotionally full.

The beauty of this album is evident as each track targets the romanticisation of depression, whilst asking questions to provoke thought rather than brushing it off with a false happy ending.

This one is thematically very ambitious, and the focus on crafting songs to fit the narrative of the album has perhaps led to a collection that is a little less memorable overall.
