As Tyga would tell it, The Gold Album is his "serious" album, the one where he stops being polite and starts getting real. Instead, we have 12 microwave-nuked approximations of Drake and Kanye songs, with none of the wit, soul, or edge.

Tyga has served up a solid effort with The Gold Album: 18th Dynasty, exploring new territory and pushing himself in a different direction than he’d gone during his ratchet past work. It’s just not necessarily a better one.

The album is full of songs that falter either for a lack of a guiding beat or because of misguided lyrics that carry little purpose.

“The Gold Album” flopped both critically and commercially despite the musical production provided by hip-hop legend Kanye West. Without West’s touch, “Fu k Wat They Talkin Bout” dropped to even further depths. The resulting mixtape is a disjointed assortment of entertaining beats ruined by lazy, offensive wordplay that leaves a bad taste and fails to make a point.

I would’ve much rather listened to an album full of bangers, and I would’ve liked it for what it was. However, Tyga’s latest album just feels like a miss to me.

All in all, it’s probably his best project so far, and we should enjoy his growth on records.
