The Final Cut

The Final Cut is the twelfth studio album by English rock band Pink Floyd. It was first released on 21 March 1983 in the United Kingdom by Harvest Records and on 2 April 1983 in the United States by Columbia Records. It was the band's last album to feature founding member, bassist, and songwriter Roger Waters, who left in 1985; it is also the only Pink Floyd album for which Waters alone has writing credits, and the first not to feature keyboardist Richard Wright. As such, The Final Cut is sometimes viewed as a de facto Waters solo album. -Wikipedia

Listen to The Final Cut not as a Pink Floyd album, but as a Waters solo album, and you may be surprised. It may have been released 25 years ago, but it has managed to stay relevant during these troubling times.

Distinctive, to be sure, but not easy to love and, depending on your view, not even that easy to admire.

A bigger and more traditionally Floyd sound: prominent guitar, energetic female chorus, and David Gilmour’s voice.

  • Pop Matters

Pink Floyd's The Final Cut is one of the most pointed and direct anti-war albums ever produced, and for all its faults and failures, its message is still as relevant and accessible today as it was those 20-odd years ago.

The Final Cut is unique and at times considerably enjoyable. It’s just a shame there’s a few blemishes along the way.

This is slicker than oyster shit and slips past your subconscious faster than it goes in, making it an almost complete waste of time.

The Final Cut' is hard work. Rays of light are few and far between, and even on paper the track titles - including 'The Gunner's Dream' and 'Paranoid Eyes' - suggest an arduous listen.

  • Off the Record

“The Final Cut” is the barest bones Floyd album ever made. It is mostly Waters’ singing over pretty sparse music.

This may be Pink Floyd’s most emotional record, to date… It gets most people when listening to it… Strikes a chord, deep down.

The Final Cut is a Pink Floyd album in name only, but, as completely written and conceived by Waters, it makes some strong, if blunt points, about the slippery slope to which even minor wars can lead, and is sporadically brilliant in its efforts to do so.

In the end this series was/is a well-done re-release of great albums done my one of the most influential bands in rock.

Overall I think this is honesty in some ways a pretty good album, not in all but some aspects.

Punk rock may have gained steam in part as a response to the grandiosity of the Floyd and their prog-rock contemporaries, but Waters’ raw, bleeding vocals here prove he could keep up with the best of them.

I like it more than The Wall, and it's the best Roger Waters solo album ever, heh.

There are some incredible lyrical moments throughout the album that had they been on any other recording may have been lauded for their insight and poetical thought.

This is the sort of album that you're going to have to work pretty hard to appreciate. If you think you're up for the challenge, then it's certainly worth the time and effort you'll put into it. After all, these lyrics will potentially contain some very rich rewards for you.

A philosophical essay that could just as well be left without music at all. Maybe it would even be better.

The Final Cut represents Pink Floyd's evolution as concept-driven lyrical pioneers, leaving behind much of the instrumental wankery of Meddle and other efforts.
