The Comeback is where the Zac Brown Band is for now, which is also where they started, and probably where they always should have been, and where they always should be. It may not work for you, but it works for them, because it’s who they are, as opposed to who they want to be.

  • The Musical Divide

But while this isn’t the band’s best album and shows more than a few rougher edges of an act starting to age, I’d rather praise quality when I hear it, especially when this is the most inspired the band has sounded in years. Let’s just hope that maybe this time of reflection and understanding has brought Brown at least a little more back down to Earth. For as much as he likely doesn’t want to hear this, country music would be better for it.

It’s not only Zac Brown Band’s comeback, it’s ours as well. Live music was always something we took for granted—an industry we always thought would be around—but for a year and a half, the world had other plans. So next time you’re on the fence about going out to a show because you have no one to go with, the tickets are expensive, or it’s a weeknight, remember how empty that year and a half felt. This record puts that in perspective—cherish the things in life we currently have because we don’t know how long it is going to be around for.

Life was no doubt simpler when Brown was singing about fried chicken, cold beer and a loud radio. But Zac Brown Band seems to remind listeners that no matter where in the world you find yourself, music has the potential to unify. The Comeback gives off more than just one note and will appeal to more than fans of traditional country. It’s a strong return.

Granted, Brown’s good-ole-boy persona never drifts far from the surface, and any number of tracks reinforce that notion. In that regard, The Comeback resonates exactly as intended.

Oh Zac Brown, you silly, beautiful bastard. Where have you been for the last nine years? ‘The Comeback’ is a masterpiece. It’s deep, meaningful, fun, fiery and just hits, from song to song.

Brown leans into clichés a little too hard and never can resist hitting the nail squarely on the head -- witness "Fun Having Fun," whose meaning is underscored over and over -- but he's savvy enough of a craftsman to make this blatant pandering effective and maybe even a little fun, if you're in the right mood.
