The Colour and the Shape

The Colour and the Shape is the second studio album by American rock band Foo Fighters, released on May 20, 1997 by Roswell and Capitol Records. Produced by Gil Norton, it was the official debut of the Foo Fighters as a band, as their eponymous 1995 debut album was primarily recorded by frontman Dave Grohl and producer Barrett Jones as a demo. After the project ballooned and became an international success, the group convened for pre-production on their second album in the fall of 1996, and brought in producer Norton to establish a popsensibility for the tracks. The band strived to create a full-fledged rock record, although the music press predicted another grunge offshoot.-Wikipedia

Instrumentation on this album is in no way lacking. Dave Grohl's guitar skills help to make this album what it is.

Almost too sleek a sheen, something that comes as a shock after the raggedness of the group’s debut.

the noise/pop relationship feels more forced, like Grohl's trying too hard to grind down his sweet tooth into a fang, dressing up virtually every song in a chrome-plated guitar gilding that boosts the volume and fidelity, but ultimately dulls the impact.

That’s Dave Grohl, a simple rock guy in a simple rock band who occasionally manages to write some really good songs.

“Up in Arms” starts slow and then kicks into high gear about a third of the way in and gives me goosebumps every single time.

Grohl’ s drumming does give the Foos muscle underneath their glossy exterior. From the powerful rush of the band to the big hooks and sleek surface

The sequencing of the songs were put together as if they were a therapy session reflecting that time.

Has the songs, it has the riffs, and mindblowing drums. It has the vibe, and it reeks of passion.

Foo Fighters have all the intensity of Nirvana - all the guitar noise: chaos bordering on ecstasy; all the barely controlled vocals. They also have something else. Foo Fighters have hope.

Near perfect album. Featuring songs that shift through dynamic ranges and highlight Grohl’s drum work and voice.
