The Colour and the Shape
| Foo FightersThe Colour and the Shape
The Colour and the Shape is the second studio album by American rock band Foo Fighters, released on May 20, 1997 by Roswell and Capitol Records. Produced by Gil Norton, it was the official debut of the Foo Fighters as a band, as their eponymous 1995 debut album was primarily recorded by frontman Dave Grohl and producer Barrett Jones as a demo. After the project ballooned and became an international success, the group convened for pre-production on their second album in the fall of 1996, and brought in producer Norton to establish a popsensibility for the tracks. The band strived to create a full-fledged rock record, although the music press predicted another grunge offshoot.-Wikipedia

Sputnik Music
Instrumentation on this album is in no way lacking. Dave Grohl's guitar skills help to make this album what it is.
-
All Music
Almost too sleek a sheen, something that comes as a shock after the raggedness of the group’s debut.
-
Pitchfork
the noise/pop relationship feels more forced, like Grohl's trying too hard to grind down his sweet tooth into a fang, dressing up virtually every song in a chrome-plated guitar gilding that boosts the volume and fidelity, but ultimately dulls the impact.
-
Spin
That’s Dave Grohl, a simple rock guy in a simple rock band who occasionally manages to write some really good songs.
-
Punknews
The Colour and the Shape had no filler, just bigger hits
-
Pop Culture Beast
“Up in Arms” starts slow and then kicks into high gear about a third of the way in and gives me goosebumps every single time.
-
Slacker
Grohl’ s drumming does give the Foos muscle underneath their glossy exterior. From the powerful rush of the band to the big hooks and sleek surface
-
Pop Matters
That those words are set to a killer hook doesn't exactly hurt.
-
LA Times
Hard and soft, erratic and edgy, packed with anger, fear and foreboding, "The Colour and the Shape" slips fresh air into its sound
-
AXS
The sequencing of the songs were put together as if they were a therapy session reflecting that time.
-
Isra Box
Has the songs, it has the riffs, and mindblowing drums. It has the vibe, and it reeks of passion.
-
AV Club
Benefits immeasurably from that mixture of grunge darkness and pop levity.
-
Ultimate Guitar
I highly reccomend this album to anyone who has only heard the later stuff, and wants to hear the rest of Foo Fighters albums.
-
The Current
A significant American rock release of the era, and it is now viewed as seminal modern rock album.
-
Evo News
It is a brilliant album.
-
Daily Vault
Foo Fighters have all the intensity of Nirvana - all the guitar noise: chaos bordering on ecstasy; all the barely controlled vocals. They also have something else. Foo Fighters have hope.
-
Dodax
The powerful rush of the band to the big hooks and sleek surface, wound up defining the sound of post-grunge modern rock
-
Sounds of Broadstreet
Near perfect album. Featuring songs that shift through dynamic ranges and highlight Grohl’s drum work and voice.
-
FYE
Even the glossy final mix of Nevermind has nothing on the unapologetic arena rock of The Colour and the Shape -- it’s all polished thunder, rock & roll
-
Golden Plec
A mini movement within the larger scope of the album that cuts right to the heart of Grohl’s personal life
-
Raru
The sophomore studio album by Foo Fighters, and is the "must have" of the Fooies collection!
-
Immortal Reviews
Making career defining songs that made them who they are. The very principles of everything their sound embodies is present in this record,
-

Foo Fighters are so amazing, and the time, talent and energy they put into making The Colour And The Shape
-
Mighty Ape
The lyricism on the record is substantially more introspective and the music more developed.
