Rolling Stone
The album’s formal simplicity allows its meanings to emerge in a natural, unpretentious way.
-
Classic Rock Review
Although The Bridge was a bit weaker commercially than many of Joel’s previous albums, it is a solid album through and through and especially shines in comparison to the weak music scene in 1986.

All Music
The Bridge remains an entertaining listen, especially if it's viewed as a Reagan-era artifact. It just doesn't compare to what came before.

Sputnik Music
The album is very enjoyable, but just don't expect the Joel that you knew that made "The Stranger"
-
Ultimate Classic Rock
For the first time in a while, Joel sounded like he was reaching, and not always in a good way.
-
Huffington Post
The Bridge on the other hand seemingly had no purpose. It was just a collection of songs.

Album Reviews
Joel cites The Bridge as one of his least favorite efforts; it’s certainly a big step down from his previous streak of solid pop-rock albums through the second half of the 1970s and first half of the 1980s.

Revolvy
The album also had some New wave influences.
