  • Kurrent Music

It’s not the most coherent of records, but maybe that’s the point; after all, it is called ‘Tangled Up’.

From the first note to last, Tangled Up is a well-planned, tightly-produced and sharply-penned album that will launch this future superstar to new heights.

This, this is the most blatant, unashamed disregard for country music that I have ever witnessed, employing influences from nearly every genre except country and then labeling it “country” for some cash because in many cases, the “songs” concocted here would be laughed out of any other genre.

By playing both sides of the fence, Rhett may be a bit of an opportunist, but as his hit "Crash and Burn" indicates, there's a sly charm to his eager-to-please modern country: he's a true pop artist, harnessing the trends of his time and turning them into music that's hard to resist.

This is pop country at its most flailing, incompetent, and only gaining success because country radio is so desperate to hold onto sliding ratings that they're racing towards the crossover audience without any regard for quality.

The album takes on the principle of mashing the old with the new and consequently creates an album that is fresh, exciting and fuelled with a powerful list of hits.

Rhett sounds confident in putting his own stamp on his music quite well as "Tangled Up" is a meaty sophomore effort showcasing someone with a lot of musical smarts.

Tangled Up is a fun album. You don’t have to like country to enjoy it. Perhaps you won’t even pick up that it’s supposed to be a country album.
