Super Sunset

Super Sunset is the fourth extended play (EP) by Canadian singer and songwriter Alexandra Hughes, known professionally as Allie X. It was released on October 29, 2018, by Twin Music. The EP follows the release of her debut studio album CollXtion II (2017), and was inspired by Hughes' tumultuous experiences since moving to Los Angeles. The concept was illustrated by three archetypes: "Sci-Fi Girl", the "Hollywood Starlet", and the "Nun". -Wikipedia

  • The Line of Best Fit

Super Sunset excels by proving that regardless of how much of Allie X the human is revealed, there’s so much more to the artist that has yet to be discovered

Allie X comes across as someone with true vision who has finally come into her own, and ‘Super Sunset’ asserts her as a very exciting and original artist. We can’t wait to hear what she does next.

On Super Sunset Allie X reveals herself to be a smart and focused artist and singer/songwriter. Speaking of focused, “Focus” is the name of the final cut on Super Sunset, and is just one of many brilliant songs contained on the EP, and neatly sums up what this album’s all about. Other standouts include the first single and video “Not So Bad in LA,” “Science” and lastly, my personal favourite, the catchy and cheeky “Girl of the Year.”

Super Sunset does not work as a sonic collection of music, instead relying on unreleased visuals and supposed context to force together two pieces from opposite sonic puzzles.

Her sophomore album, Super Sunset, is a bite sized production at 6 full songs, an intro, and an interlude, however, put together they form a cohesive work with a clear concept in mind. Inspired by Canadian-born Allie X’s experiences living in Los Angeles, the sound of the album toes the line between 80s nostalgia and polished electro pop. Her lyrics are wry and heartfelt, and allow her spectacular vocal talent to shine through.

Lush and extravagant, Super Sunset delivers more of Allie X’s one-of-a-kind brand of pop. Each song creates an intricately detailed world centered by a unique character. But through it all, the hitmaker never loses control. This is her story, and she is the ultimate guide. Each moment is a perfectly preserved hit with its own merits, and you won’t want to miss a second. Stream the project below and pick a favorite track!

“Super Sunset” goes against the misconceptions of the music industry and the belief that an emerging artist has to look or sound a certain way in order to gain success. It’s proof that chasing dreams is not as pointless as we sometimes believe. It’s a glimmer of hope to anyone, including Allie X herself, that success is just around the corner, so long as you push yourself and give yourself the time to grow.

While this mini-album feels all too short, clocking in at a mere 22 minutes, every second of it oozes creative energy. The imagery demonstrated through the characters is truly icing on the cake to brings the sound landscapes the songs build into the visual world.
