Stillmatic

Stillmatic is the fifth studio album by American rapper Nas, released on December 18, 2001 by Ill Will and Columbia Records. In contrast to his previous work's gangsta rap themes, the album contains socially conscious and philosophical themes similar to that of his 1994 debut Illmatic. Nas' lyrics address topics such as ghetto life, American politics, and his feud with rapper Jay-Z. -Wikipedia

The Intro is actually unlike many rap intro's, it has some nice lines, and gets anyone who doesn't know a lot about Nas' past up to speed. The beat is upbeat, It sounds a lot like a Kanye West beat with a high-pitched retro feel.

Stillmatic certainly isn't as commercial as past Nas output, but it places him squarely behind the times. Facts are facts: he's not the best rapper in the business anymore.

Next time Jay-Z decides to dis NAS about kicking knowledge, he should listen to the words on Stillmatic. Nas is back, and he has my vote for one of the top albums of the year. Cop the CD. ‘Nuff said.

While no album may ever top his debut’s brilliance, this one comes close enough to make even his most passionate haters happy to hear the raw essence of hip-hop revealed in all it’s true glory.

for an artist who built his rep traversing breath-defying lyrical heights, Stillmatic’s by-the-books beats and rhymes don’t sound like the start of anything good.

Alright so the end of the album, and if you’re like me, i’m not gonna compare this to lllmatic. Because this isn’t lllmatic, this is Stillmatic and it’s actually not bad. Not gonna say I love this shit because there are some track on here that I would have left off this album. But some of these songs were actually pretty good.

The inevitable conclusion here is that Nas has finally redeemed himself from his latest misfires such as “Nastradamus”, this CD is quality on nearly every level. Production is outstandingly perfect, Nas brings the fire lyrically never wasting a single line and this is a must have in the CD collection.

This begs the question, then, "is this a classic?" I would say so, but it is not a masterpiece.

It was great to hear Nas actually spittin’ again. He had some cool verses on Nastradamus, but this album blows that shit away. I fuck with this album. This album is dope.

He has grown to be a titan of the Hip Hop industry and a lot of this success wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the pop culture revival that was Stillmatic.

In the main, however, it's a sad illustration of the man's decline, an uninspired collection of formulaic compositions with a tinny commercial sheen that's enough to put off all but the most undiscriminating.

"The track tackles society's various ills, from drug abuse to the penal system. Without question, Stillmatic is the artist's most complete album since he debuted eight years ago with Illmatic." - Billboard Magazine.
