The production is bright and ready for the radio, but the songs always return to a tone of reflection and gently nurtured hope. Maddie & Tae have a shining future before them, but this is an album the pair can only make once — at this age, in this special circumstance, with nothing fully resolved.

  • Wide Open Country

With Start Here, Maddie and Tae reveal who they are as artists outside of the initial blinding spotlight. Their fresh perspective on modern country storytelling is as fun as it is honest. Within 11 tracks, the duo takes listeners through stories that feel ripped out of a journal.

Start Here is an excellent album. I have never heard anything resembling Dixie Chicks harmony and style before, but I hear it now in Maddie & Tae. They can bring the ones who think of “country” as Sam Hunt and Kelsea Ballerini back to real country music. Pop makes an occasional appearance on this album, but mostly, we hear fiddles, acoustic guitars, and mandolins. Maddie & Tae have brought hope to country music

Along with creating amazing ballads, Maddie & Tae also have a few funny bones in their bodies. There are three comical tracks on this album, including the smash hit debut single "Girl In A Country Song" along with "Shut Up and Fish" and "Sierra."

  • Pop Matters

The atmosphere in the song is in their voices as much as anything else. Throughout the album, whether nursing a broken heart or giving self-help advice to others, they give the impression they know this is all fleeting, that they’re on to better things, be it adulthood or super-stardom.

Whether you like the album or not, Start Here is a sign of the tide starting to change, for women, for traditional instrumentation, and for quality songwriting. And whether it’s just a sign, or the marker for a true sea change, there’s no harm in acknowledging and celebrating it.
