  • Variety

It’s expensive sounding, with a stellar cast of collaborators and dramatic orchestrations. And by the time the country-soul closing track rolls up — fittingly, a Babyface number, with a put-your-hands-in-the-air chorus’ — fans will be ready to start the whole thing over.

this is a full-bodied record that exhibits Braxton’s stylistic and vocal range.

The album is brief, almost EP length, and doesn’t end nearly as well as it begins, but Spell My Name still features some great tunes and is proof that Toni Braxton’s smooth alto can grace a trap instrumental just as well as a Darkchild production or a slow jam.

Toni has given us an R&B album to savor with songs for every stage of a relationship, from the initial rush to the bitter end.

  • The Daily Nebraskan

Braxton has been nothing but consistent throughout her musical ventures, and “Spell My Name” is another solid addition to her storied discography and a nice nostalgic venture for those who reminisce about the 2000s R&B scene.

The material tends toward routine, but Braxton's elegant distress cuts through everything with conviction.

  • Soul Tracks

this album does little to further Braxton’s relevance in the modern musical landscape. Although she hits the mark with relevant and relatable lyrics on several occasions, the songs by and large fail to make a lasting impact in the course of trying to sound current.

With its rich production and luscious orchestrations, Spell My Name musically and sonically soars in unison with Braxton’s phenomenal and extraordinary voice – which, should be noted, sounds better than ever – her delivery and range bringing each track to life to create a truly cohesive and artistic body of work that stands side by side with the rest of Braxton’s phenomenally successful and much loved back catalogue.

Simply put, Spell My Name feels like a vintage Toni Braxton album. No left-field surprises, no awkward attempts for relevancy. It’s just the Toni we know and love. It’s what we expect when we hear her name.

It’s far from a failure, with ‘Spell My Name’ boasting moments of rich maturity, the kind of lyrical openness that has always made her work so intriguing. Yet there’s also an unwillingness to embrace contemporary movements in R&B, in the manner of, say, Brandy’s recent LP. But perhaps that’s churlish. Toni Braxton has more than earned the right to exist on her own terms, and fans will find much to adore on her tenth studio album.

  • Radio 13

Spell My Name is a mediocre and lacklustre affair with nine uninspired and unimaginative songs that last a total of thirty-five minutes.

  • Rated R&B

With her newest studio album, the first in the fourth decade of her storied music career, the living legend remains poised as the queen of Adult R&B radio.

Out of all of the albums I have reviewed this year, Spell My Name was the hardest to create a top 5 songs list for. I found myself in love with song after song on the album. Toni Braxton went into the studio and did what she does best and ended up making a borderline masterpiece. I don’t care if you’re a Toni fan or not, do yourself a favor and listen to Spell My Name!

Longtime fans will be completely satisfied and for those just coming on board will now that this living legend is one of the artists still keeping R&B alive and well. It’s about time you put some “respek” on her name.
