It’s bold choices are bound to alienate some audiences, but maybe it’s actually just separating the men and women from the girls and the boys. Even those that do potentially get alienated by Special Effects, must admit that it is one of the year's bravest releases.

So, all in all, Tech doesn’t do much to break new ground, true, but succeeds in creating an overwhelmingly consistent listen.

With Special Effects, Tech N9ne is able to channel his emotions from his personal tragedies to create some more of the hard-hitting music he’s known for, and he also made some dream collaborations happen. Whether or not this is his best work is yet to be decided, but it’s definitely another excellent addition to Tech N9ne’s great discography.

While the sprawling project isn’t perfect, “Special Effects” may be Tech N9ne’s masterpiece.

By far Tech’s best album. More complete than All 6’s and 7’s, more polished than Everready, more poetic than K.O.D., and more energetic than Anghellic. Tech successfully eclipses all of his previous best efforts in every way.

  • HTF Magazine

Despite the variation in sounds, Special Effect seamlessly flows from beginning to end. Tech N9ne continues to deliver meaningful lyrics whilst keeping up his ridiculously fast flow over diverse production. The album won’t revolutionize the world of hip-hop, but this album is impressive and shows that after 15 studio albums Tech N9ne still has the hunger.

I didn’t really like this album that much, but the shit that I DID like is really great in my opinion. I kinda wanna hear even more shit from him now. Hopefully it’ll be more consistent than this…

What Special Effects will ultimately accomplish for Tech, finally, is the grand reveal of that eruption to the mainstream. Steadily nearing the fine line between underground and mainstream for years now, Tech’s 15th studio album finds itself as the apex of where the two classifications meet and invite both the well-acquainted enthusiast and the curious onlooker.

Tech N9ne does indeed provide his best work on Special Effects. From the production side all the way to the signature Tech growl or “chyea”, every fine detail is accomplished in its fullest capacity.
