Souled Out

Souled Out is the debut studio album by American singer Jhené Aiko. It was released on September 9, 2014, by ArtClub International, ARTium Recordings, and Def Jam Recordings. After leaving Epic Records in 2003, Aiko took a hiatus from her music career and returned in 2011, with the release of her debut mixtape Sailing Soul(s). After raising her profile with the mixtape, Aiko met with record producer No I.D., and subsequently secured a recording contract with his newly found record label imprint, ARTium. Following her record deal, Aiko immediately began working on the album; during the recording process, Aiko released her debut EP Sail Out (2013), to bridge the gap between her mixtape and the album. -Wikipedia

There are no vocal aerobics; everything's soft and gentle. But her message still comes across urgent, relatable and full of angst.

Aiko has outdone herself with this very personal, heart-on-her-sleeve album, letting a listener into her corner of the world for an hour or so. The ironic part about it all is that, although her songs are so narrative to her life and the situations she’s experienced, it’s not hard to feel like it’s happened to you before.

“Souled Out” is sure to spark emotion; overall Jhene’s work speaks for itself and the whole package is in its own class. A very well done debut from its production to its vocals “Souled Out” is sure to be sold out.

It seems that Aiko has really tuned into her strengths as a singer, such as perseverance, and has personalised Souled Out to agree with them. The songs give off a strong message to the listener, for example “It’s cool” describes the chase of a faraway love interest, whilst the song “Wading” is overflowing with unreciprocated romances, emotions and contains forsaken, echoing vocals.

I know Jhené and I aren't actually dating, but considering the thematic content of the album, I couldn't help but treat Souled Out as a step in our relationship.

I think the album was well produced and well written. To me it didn't need to be captivating to be good. I liked the feel of it for the right moment. Will I go running to my friends to spread the news of this album? Probably not. But next time I'm chillin' in the park, I'll return to Souled Out, I'm sure.

Jhene has multiple different styles and she doesn't just need to sing in one to be good. A strong, fierce tone or a timid, airy tone. Either one Jhene can work it. She is her own artist, no one can compare. In my eyes, Jhene can sing any genre and kill it.

Souled Out is a rather strong offering and a valuable collection of songs for those listeners who are attracted by this new wave of R&B music that’s distanced itself from traditional sounds and has attempted to bring new life to a genre that’s been accused of not having much more to offer lately.

Souled Out” is cohesive and its tracks blend while taking listeners on a cosmic journey. The sound of the album is at times acute, airy and it leaves you feeling like you’re in an emotional deep-sea. Aiko has to come up for air though and command a little more of a presence on her own tracks or else she will sink.

The problem with Aiko is that she feels a bit watered down now, and a little bit bereft of surprises. It’s what leaves us cold on tracks like Spotless Mind and It’s Cool – we’ve heard those beats before, we’ve experienced that cadence of melody.
