Its slightly peculiar over-reliance on technology only makes it more human, more lovable, and more rock and roll.

Skimming the top, fun. gets credit for its positive attitude and pocket full of catchy melodies, but on the whole, Some Nights remains forgettable.

The music blends classic bubble-pop tunefulness with rococo rock & roll – close harmony chorales, showy key changes, a dash of Queen here, a dollop of Les Miz there.

Such boundless enthusiasm could be teeth-grating even without Stars' overuse of Auto-Tune, but it's hard to dislike such catchy tunes and lyrics that are funny, sincere and oddly moving.

Soon, though, the rock theatricality and arm-in-arm choruses get ditched for Auto-Tuned verses, seven-minute freak-funk (frunk?) jams, and awkward hip-hop beats.

Some Nights, their second album, finds the trio doing what they do best: Crafting anthemic rock songs with catchy melodies and excellent musicianship.

But for those of us who don't enjoy mainstream pop, the songs were sharper when those sensibilities weren't being facilitated.

"Some Nights" is a pretty accurate assessment of a young adult's emotional ups and downs, describing a guy who's not sure what he stands for.

This is a tightly-produced piece of ruthless, pop-chart domination ambition and out-and-out energy that more than lives up to the band name.

The songs are both anthemic and human-sized, the heartfelt words and naked emotions are never buried, and the music is uplifting, not overpowering.

It sums up an album that's full of contradictions. The sound is niche yet unashamedly commercial, the songs are quirky but All-American radio friendly, and the lyrics confident without being the least bit cocky.

The album itself has a great flow about it, somehow making nearly every song sound better in context.

This album is weird but good, and you should buy it if you’re looking for a statement to define the 2010s, not redefine the ’50s-’70s.

To be fair, Some Nights begins with kitsch promise, but from thereon in, this quickly becomes the stuff of a thousand, middling US soft-rockers.

Overall, Some Nights is a great album. The musicians are clearly awesome but the best part about them is that they don’t seem interested in creating “serious” music, opting to craft good music with a fun approach.

I think this album is really amazing, the lyrics seem to tie in all over the theme of "Some Nights," even showcasing that phrase in other songs beside the title track. It has its few flaws, but they are overshadowed by the amazing qualities this album has to offer.

You can really hear the potential in the band. But, unfortunately the songs start to get very ropey from track four. The rest of the album is pretty much forgettable, you could probably press stop after track three and not have to worry about missing anything.
