  • Pitchfork

Trading away the dance-pop trifles of their hits for a faceless stylistic shuffle, the duo seems to be tiring of itself, too.

Amid this disingenuous dross, the mercifully wordless EDM bombast strikes the most honest note.

Overall, Sick Boy is as much an improvement over MDNO as you could hope for. ... And the more introspective songs on the album are actually rock solid on their own merit.

The hooks aren't half as memorable, and what sticks isn't the music but its emotions, which aren't sharply drawn to begin with. Instead of conning us with a smile, Taggart looks at us po-faced, shoves this plate of music in our hands, and shuffles sheepishly away.

World-weariness and a troubled heart suit them well and managed to do some good on Sick Boy.

Sick Boy attempts to take a social stand, but the lyrics become swallowed up by the overwhelmingly similar bass drops and loud electronic beats. In an attempt to appear as the woke artists they want to be, the album feels Frankensteined together and misses the mark by a long shot.

It is the sound of two men coming to terms with having worked at a Hollister for a summer in college. It is the worst of EDM, with all of the fun surgically removed. It is, for me, a baw-eest.

Sick Boy represents the slightest of steps up from their debut project, and it’s good to see that they’re at least entertaining the idea of varying their sound a bit more.

It’s hard to shake the feeling that “Sick Boy” is not very good. The duo, which has bounced from one PR nightmare to the next, make a statement about America’s skewered priorities on their new single, but it comes across as self-pitying instead of defiant or damning.

Given the self-rejecting and stylistic anonymity of Sick Boy in general, It's enough to suggest the Chainsmokers maybe even getting sick of themselves.

The electronics are subdued but move powerfully, and the instrumental swells and wades when it needs to.

Yet, the mediocrity of “Sick Boy” isn’t enough to save the EP; overall, it still comes off as whiny and, truthfully, kind of gives me a headache.

All in all, it’s a fairly decent EP. It’s a lot less introspective than their earlier work, and this will play well with both old and new fans of the EDM duo.

I like the fact that the guys have added two really, chill and slowed and two upbeat and dance-y tracks onto this EP! It’s a good introduction, if we are getting ready for another big release in the next coming months! I want the songs to be as unique like these were on this effort.

Sick Boy gets very repetitive after a while, even at the short length of 32 minutes.

While this album is a massive step in the right direction, it still seems that The Chainsmokers are a little lost on their own sound.

Sick Boy makes a half-hearted step away from the already lackluster electronic pop the band has previously established by attempting to smuggle EDM elements into tracks about social issues.

One of the most disheartening things to me about the group is that they clearly have the capacity to be talented and creative, but spend most of their time watering down their sound and catering to what they think we want to hear.

None of the songs were objectively bad, but none of them rose to distinguish themselves either. If I had to use one word to describe the quality of all the album’s songs, it would be “mediocre.”
