He's just made it more manic, releasing some Dirty South tension with Shaq-hand-sized claps and Catfish Collins chicken-scratch guitar.

His daring misfire is the rare major-label hip-hop album that's arguably too adventurous for its own good.

You may not be impressed on the first listen, but if you give the tracks some time this is exquisitely produced pop/R&B that's more than the sum of its parts.

Shock Value will only be backing evidence, rather than the landmark album that propelled his name to the top of the pop world.

Judging by the quality of Shock Value, it seems Timbaland’s content to let loose of a few rungs and wallow amongst the mediocre for a while.

I’m not mad at Timbaland for branching out. And that’s saying a lot, coming from a guy who’s always mad about something.

For all the trademark sonic trickery - honking rave synthesizers, fidgety beats, odd samples, vocal effects - there's a lack of decent songs.

Timbaland may be the James Brown of his era, but he'll need his own Star Time-style box set to make a definitive case.

He gives Shock Value a Burn It. Greg can't even be that kind. He is completely disappointed by this album and is forced to give it a Trash It rating.

Though he had some cold moments, when you re-listen to Shock Value in today’s music scene, it was an innovative LP that folks back in the day didn’t give Timbaland much credit for.

The problem with this though is Timbaland, as a singer, gets pushed into the shadows, so the listener almost forgets this is his CD, which honestly, isn’t that unfortunate.

The album is void of any individual expression from Timbaland and is instead a string of songs that seem to be what he thinks people want to hear -- clever for a businessman, but not so respectable for an artist.

And in having to use the perfunctory services of stars more concerned with credit than craft, Timbaland condemns his album to a string of half-hearted inanities.
