On his Stones Throw-released debut LP, this SoCal musician blends salsa, broken beats, hip-hop, and 70s-style soul into an optimistic, effervescent piece of bedroom studio miscellany.

He's a talented musician, that much is clear -- he handles almost all of the production (labelmate Madlib takes the reigns on "One Inna,") the instrumentation, and the vocals himself -- and he proves this right away, and nothing on Shine Through is bad; it's just not as good as it initially seemed it was going to be.

  • Hip Hop DX

The album entitled Shine Through finds Blacc surrounded within the walls of drum and bass, salsa, soul, dancehall, gospel and folk. Stepping up to the challenge Blacc switches styles like the 16 tracks ask you to, but he impresses equally on covers (which may beg for criticism in comparison) of Sam Cooke and Kanye’s partner in crime, John Legend; rarely do you find an artist willing to face the challenge of criticism.

Shine Through, his anticipated debut album, marks the entry of a singer who, unquestionably, has talent, but, as of now, lacks sophistication and artistic maturity.

Now for another something completely different. Aloe Blacc brings a Soul music sound that is altogether something different from most of what you've heard before. Get ready for some great, sparse, and subtle production that puts Aloe Blacc's vocalism and lyricism at the forefront. This album came out in 2006, and it still sounds fresh.

SoCal native Aloe Blacc, one half of mainstay indie rap duo Emanon, has evolved into a true Renaissance man with his solo debut, Shine Through. Dubbed the indie R. Kelly by online retailer Turntable Lab, Aloe integrates an amazingly broad spectrum of influences, which range widely from the music of his parents’ native Panama, to the acoustic guitar stylings of folk artist Cat Stevens, to the soul-stirring sounds of the Negro Spirituals. His sound often forays into the digital R&B realm, but always grooves with a tinge of Latin and the pulse of hip-hop.
